show clothes

I'm shopping for a hunt coat, breeches, and ratcatcher. It's been forever since I've shopped for these items and since funds are lacking and cowboy country is short of places to find these items, ebay is the store of choice. I have a couple of questions and I could use some advice. First, what kind of sizing should I be looking for? I'm tall, mostly leg, wear a 10T in jeans, 10 to 12 in shirt sizes (I like 12 because I've got shoulders!). Also, what about color? I know HUS classes are pretty "traditional", I have black field boots, and I'll be riding a palomino!

Thank you so much for any help you can give!

I show mainly on the hunter/jumper A circuit. I would go with a dark colored hunt coat, a light shirt, and tan or khaki breeches.
Hunt coats and shirts usually run slightly smaller than your regular dress size. For instance I usually wear a 6 or 8 in dresses, but my hunt coat is a 10. Shirts generally run the same as the coats, as far as fit, but there are some differences between brands. Van Teal makes a nice shirt, and they usually run pretty true to size. Essex shirts, I find, run smaller.
Breeches really depend on the brand. Tailored Sportsman, which is what I show in, usually run a little on the short side, so if you are tall, you probably want to go with the breeches designated as "tall." Don't get skin tight breeches, either. Get something that fits slightly looser. The skin tight look is out in the show ring now. They should have a slightly relaxed fit, it they fit correctly. Try to find side zips, if you can. They give a more tailored look.
I would go with a Navy hunt coat. Very traditional, and will be around for years to come. There are alot of different colors out there right now, but they seem to come and go, depending on the fad of the year. A pale shirt with some faint pin striping or checkering would be nice. Don't go too bright.
Don't try to match your clothes to your horse's coloring. Go for a contrast, and stay with classic colors. You can never go wrong that way.
Also - if you don't have an approved helmet, and you are planning on riding in USEF shows, know that approved helmets are REQUIRED starting this year. Even for under saddle classes, and for adults. (Just a little side note.)

Hope this helps!

Well, navy is always in for a jacket, and colored shirts are getting pretty popular (I wear a navy jacket and light blue, but bright, shirt). Breeches a tan/khaki color (there are a bunch of differant names for those shades) work best, kinda timeless.

As far as sizes go - I'm a bit smaller, but I'll give you my sizes, and hopefully it will help you out ("normal" sizes listed first, show clothes sizes second):
Pants: 3/4 w/36" inseam// breeches 26 (I think you add 22 to your american size)
Shirts: Small or x-small// 14 - I've got pretty broad shoulders, too.
Jacket: small// 12 long - I've got long arms, but a short torso, the long jacket is a hair long on my torso and short on my arms, but it is close enough that it's not too noticable. I am NOT busty - at all, and if I was, a 12 would not work.

Hopefully that will give you at least a starting point, maybe others know more about how to convert those sizes!

You can never go wrong with a navy coat and tan breeches, with a white or pale pastel shirt. A hunter green coat is good too, and would be nice on a palomino. Breeches are sized by your waist size in inches, so measure your waist size and buy that size of breeches. (In my experience they tend to run a bit bigger than I'd like, so I buy a size down-- but it depends on how you want them to fit.) Shirts tend to size by bust size-- NOT bra size, but the actual size of your chest at its' widest point.

Good luck, and I love ebay for good inexpensive riding clothes!

Try this auction I have gotten some very nice inexpensive english show clothes. Sometimes they don't have what I want but it changes everyday so keep looking. I notice right now they don't have any coats listed but they do get them its just a matter of checking. Its connected with Country Supply so if you click on their website you will find more stuff but it will be a little higher priced but still good prices. The stuff I have gotten has all been very nice and I received it very quickly
