The Big Shows

I have a few questions! I think im going to put my app Smokey through some more training, then maybe later take him to the big APHC shows if he improves. Hes a nice guy and only 4yrs, I know a person who shows in Aphc so they can help me out! I was browsing online and saw a horse who got most colorful halter and looked just like my gelding!!! I would have thought it was him. But I have a few questions
* Should I have a tail extender? My apps tail is long and almost drags the ground but is thin at the end so I would need it to make it thicker.
* What all do the judges look for?
* This might be funny, but do they have anything to do w/ bloodlines? My horse has some nice blood lines but not the best. So I was wondering if that matters any.
Thanks The tail extender is the main thing I need answered!!

The best thing that I did before I started showing at the big shows was to go and watch a few. I mean really watch and concentrate. You will get a idea of what the fads are and how judges place them. The big shows definatly go through fads. Boot colors, types and colors of jackets or vests. Even halters and saddle pads. and it varies from breed to breed. Good luck, its fun but it can be a pain too.

I think that'll be a good idea! Do you have any idea how much it costs to enter a class such as colorful halter?

Isn't having a sparse tail and mane an appy trait? If so I don't think they'd want you to put an extension on the tail?? But don't ask me I only show breed shows with my minis. But I do wish you tons of luck!

Sparse tails are a trait of apps, but that is why a lot of people like the QH blood in them. They like to see full tails. Or maybe not. That is something to look at when you go to a show to study up. I know with the APHA shows I went to, it was $20 for a class then there was a gate fee. Sometimes they require you to be a member of that particular club that is holing the show.

Shows

Good luck and remember it's about having fun. I own QH's but don't breed show because of the money and politics. Unfortunately even though it's an appy trait to have a thin mane or tail it's not considered "acceptable" to show that way! I think it's a load of but it's the politics. It would be hard to say without seeing you appy's tail. Certain classes always have certain bloodlines that seem to do better but it should be the horse/rider and his talents not the bloodlines that win. For instance I used to own a barrel horse who was out of paint cutting bloodlines that would do awesome in hunt seat classes but only okay in western classes. Definitely go to some shows and watch the classes you are interested in showing in to find out the current fads/trends and what the judges are looking for.
