Are dark colors ok?

Hey,
I am taking my horse to her first show. I have shown before but this will be a first on my own horse. YEAH I usually showed in my black jacket beige pants white shirt and tall boots. We are going to show in the baby green jumpers and I was wondering if I could wear black jacket tall boots white shirt and dark grey pants. They are devon aire dark grey just in case anyone has seen the color. The reason I am askinkg is because my beige ones are huge on me now. So should I wear my dark grey ones or do I have to buy new ones? Thanx

The gray should be fine for now - you are better off with clothes that fit and you are comfortable in than in something that would make you slip around the saddle more. I would consider upgrading to beige pants agian later on, but for now, I would wear the gray if they fit better. There are no set rules as to what colors shouldn't be worn (other than white breeches - those are pretty much reserved for dressage), as long as the clothes are neat and workmanlike, and create a clean image. I have never heard of any great horseman (George Morris for example) saying anything bad about the "colors" of a rider's breeches - are you clean, do your clothes fit, is your horse clean and in good health, and are you both turned out as good as possible (i.e. boots wiped off, horse's mane braided, pads clean and neat, etc). Those things are much more important!

Of course, in flat classes judges may have a preferance for the typical beige breeches and navy jackets, but here agian, they are only preferances and shouldn't have anything to do with how you are judged. Since you are jumping in a jumper division, there is a lot more room to play with as far as "fashion" goes.

A judge would much rather see you looking neat with crisp lines and in grey rather than beige baggy and sloppy. If you want to update later on to beige thats great, but there's nothing wrong with grey. (I happen to be really old fashion and sometimes wear rust color breeches when the urge hits me) So have fun with your grey self , if you look neat and your horse looks neat and you ride a good round, the judge doesn't care about your breeches color

In the jumpers you aren't being judges subjectively, so as long as you fit within the rules you are fine. I am guessing it is a schooling show and not a rated show anyway, so as long as your appearance is neat, and you feel good about it, then that is what should matter most.

Grey britches are due for a comeback anyway...isn't anyone else tired of just beige and khaki?

Some jumper shows tend to see riders show in polo shirts rather than jackets, but not sure about your area...you may want to take one just in case as an option as I am sure it will be cooler than a black jacket!

(oh, and around here you can also wear white breeches on classic day in the jumpers)
