You have to have a breeders certificate to register him. That will list Mom and Dad.

It will be interesting to see what color he sheds out. Does he have the primitive markings of a dun? I can't tell from the pics.

In an earlier thread
Meet Zackery - My New Foal

The lady who sold you him told you his mom was a grullo dun, did you get to see her or have pics? Did she breed the mare or did she rescue the mare? If she bred it she should know who the stud is. The stud "may or may not be registered"?? It either is or isn't

Personally I wouldn't capatialize on the Dun Deal Or Ima Dun Looking or Dunit names as it would lead people to believe your horse is a registered quarter horse with certain lines when he isn't. Why not try different names using Zachery?

agreed. Also it may congfuse someone on the color, he doesn't look to be dun.

There is a few suggestions with the word "Dun" in it. I'm not sure but i'm not seeing Dun color in the pics of him looks like a plain sorrel/chestnut color. He has a dorsal that could very well be just coutershading, don't see any other dun marking/characteristics?Would wait to see his true color when he is shed out completely before naming him anything with Dun in the name.

Umm... like this will really sound rude (not meaning to be) but that colt should be a gelding... we already have enough unregistered stallions. Just because he has a good attitude doesn't mean he should be left uncut and bred! Just telling the truth.

What registry did you register your gelding with? There are some registries that allow you to register a gelding hardshipped, but few allow a stallion to be hardshipped. Also, most people do not use stallions for showmanship. I had a trainer once tell me that showmanship and equitation classes are rare for stallions. Now we have a good friend that takes her stallion in everything including those classes, so I'm not saying it can't be done, just it isn't common. You may get some strange looks.

I too would like to know what the 4 registries are that allow for him to be hardshipped in especially as a stud.

How about Dun Nied.

Sorry it is early and I couldn't resist.
I am sure that most registries will deny a stallion as a hardship. Sorry.

ABRA, IBRA, AQHA. If I can't that's fine. But I have already talked to AQHA about it and they said I could. If he was OVER 48 months then I would have to show parent verification. His will be listed as unproven. Again thanks for your help. ABRA and IBRA if you don't know parents you still can register. So I'm fine there.

Ahh Ok the ABRA and the IBRA make sense. Didn't know that AQHA would hardship a stallion though... I know the ApHC wont even hardship unless gelded or spayed.

Well you can only register ABRA if he is in fact dun- which to me- he looks like he will be a chestnut- maybe a liver?

But anyway- he is cute- and good luck!

He is a dun most likely a red. He has a dorsel, he has the shadowing on his neck, withers, and shoulders, he has cobbwebing on his forehead that extends out from under his star/blaze. So he has the factors just not the black legs, and those are starting to darken.

Amrwmblds2 - I thought she meant the American Barrel Racing Association (ABRA). Didn't even think of the buckskin one.

Sorry to hear about your mare RIP
Either way he is a cutie...I dont know I would be keeping him a stud beings you know nothing about his pedigree...but thats all up to you. Hes a doll. So what is his name...you said your naming him after your mare....but never said what it was Do you have some better pictures that show his dorsal stripe and just some better confo and close ups by chance?

Enchanting...I know LOTS of people who show their geldings in showmanship and do extremely well. In fact, my stallion and I just won our showmanship class of 14 entries at the Gypsy breed show. I have also shown him in open shows against QH and the like and am always in the top 5. I really think it depends on the horse, not the gender.
