Show names?

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this. I was wondering what the purpose of show names is? Would you give any horse that was being shown a show name?

Thanks!

With us, its not so much that the horse has its "show name" as it has its "registered name" and its "barn name"...

For instance:

Candy is registered Candilicious (she's an exception, she shows under Candy's Kisses because her reg. name is goofy)
Peppy is registered Peppys Doc Tar
Reis is registered Afana Chocolate
Rolo is registered Alota Chocolate
Tiny is registered Tart N Tiny Too
Comet is registered Brokers Gold Comet
Ben is registered Run Ben Run

If we used their registered names around the barn, it would be too big a mouthful, so we give them barn names. Their registered names are generally a reflection of their bloodlines...Reis, Rolo, and Tiny are "candy" barn names after their mom...the other barn names are from their papers...

Hope that helps some...

As Candy said Registered horses are shown under there Registered names, usually longer & more than one word, often reflective of their breeding but not always. Many registered names aren't to flattering but think people are starting to get more creative as I'm hearing nicer/flashier sounding names than some of the old time ones.Because the names are usually longer most people give their horse a shorter easier to say barn name.I also know people that have given their grade horse a show name just to have it sound more flashy & professional for competition, than the simplier more common barn name like Blaze, sweety, socks etc just doesn't have the same effect/bling

Well imagine being in a show, the annoncer says "in Third place, Spectacular Sunrise...In Second, Wonderous Dream...& in first, Bob". You'd feel a little out of place don't you think?!

Her barn name is Rogue, she's a red roan QH. I think she'll be shown in barrels and English events (not sure which ones yet).
Thanks!

First, I'm not saying that everyone that uses show names does this, but the following is a pet peeve of mine when looking at horses to buy.

I will say one thing about listing a grade horse for sale that you have given a show name to. Please do not list on your ad the show name. To me that is very misleading in an ad. I'm not saying a lot of people do it, but I have seen it on a few occasions. Many of the sites do not allow you to select the option of registered horses only, so I go by the names on the horses to see if they are registered, then look at the ads of the ones that are. It frustrates me when I see an ad "Zips Comanche Bar" (not sure if that is a real name or not, only using for an example), and when I go into the ad to get more information it states the horse is unregistered. There are times when the ad does say it is a grade horse or unregistered, so I look for the pedigree info. If it isn't listed I contact the seller asking for the pedigree. When they reply back that the horse isn't registered, then I get disappointed, because it had sounded like a dream horse. But for us if it is a mare we want it to be registered in order to possibly breed in the future, and for the most part that is all I am looking for. I did see the same thing though when I was looking at stallions. It is just a waste of time for buyer and seller. Seller gets excited cause they have interest in their horse, only for me to come back and say I was looking for something registered.

Whats worse is if they select a name that is used, and was shown on the breed circuit, cause I go to the breed site pull the name, and get information about what the horse has done, so then I'm extra interested before I find out that it wasn't real.

Actually when we go to open shows and 4-H shows in our area our horses are listed as Sweetie, Susan, Bonnie, etc on the entry forms rather than Enchanting Firestar, Pal of Susan, and Naughty Nightshade. It seems out of place to have the registered name used in our area.

My daughters horse for a show is called "Magic's White Lightning" Magic is his barn name. It is all a play on words because he is really a grey but looks white. Is not all that fast so the lightning part does not really apply, heck she is doing western pleasure with him now and slow is just his speed. The only thing magical is that he just arrived one day in a trailer with other sale horses.
We are tossing around show names for her other horse named Phantom. Since I always call him "tiny" and he is topping out at 17.1 there is nothing tiny about him, but I am trying to come up with a name that had both Tiny and Phantom in it.
Both of her horses are grade, even though one is a pure bred Arabian (he and is papers parted ways) it is just fun to have a show name.
