Hunter jumper shows?

What exactly do you have to do at a hunter jumper show?

Hunter Jumper shows have classes over fences, as well as usually some under saddle and equitation or medal classes.

Hunters jump a fairly simple course involving lines and single jumps down the side and across the diagonal. Handy hunter and equitation classes may also have inside turns, trot jumps and such. Hunters are judged based on their suitability, training, and safety over fences. THey will be expected to do a certain number or strides between the jumps, approach jumps on the correct lead, and have even/correct distances. They should have safe jumping form, with forarms paralel to the ground when jumping.

Jumpers must jump clear and under a time alllowed, with winners based on no jumping faults and time. There are different types of classes with different rules.

The US Equestrian Federation should give you more information on the specifics of what judges look for, as well as the rules of showing and types of classes.

Wow, what a great description...I would have just said Hunters do it slow and pretty, like a pleasure horse, and jumpers do it fast and accurate, like barrel racers...

I have a daughter who shows hunter (on Candy), jumper (on Comet), pleasure classes (on Rolo), and speed events (on Comet and others)...she has a lot of fun doing the different disciplines...and I have a lot of fun taking pictures...

Mini-Stirrup is 10 and under, Short-Stirrup is 10-12 and Long-Stirrup is for over 13, no age limit but in our pointed shows the adults usually stay out of long stirrup.

Luigi has trouble doing a 5 stride line, he has a huge stride and always tries to either do it in 4 or rushes it and tries to stick an extra one in. Silly boy always thinks he knows best.

That was a great description. Normally, hunters are button braided, all clean and pretty looking (like your WP horses), and your jumpers are really quick, accurate, and able to lengthen and shorten stride on a dime. Jumper turns are crazy. You may do a complete 180 in order to hit your next fence. Hunter turns are normally wider. Also, with jumpers. If more than one person makes it past the first round clean, there is a second round also known as a jump off, where they pick the craziest turn and jumps they could think of and you are timed to see how accurate and how quick you can make your turns.
