Has anyone tried a wormer bit?

You know those things with the tube that you put the wormer up in the horses mouth. Im thinking about getting one for my hard to worm mare. Ive heard some say they work and some say they dont.
So does anyone know if they actually work?

I would think it would be just as difficult to get that in their mouth as the wormer tube.. and possibly more traumatic..

We have only two that worm hard here.. they are geting better, but we either use the pellets, or twitch them if they won't stand still - not our first option, but we did not train them.. so we are having to undo poor training in the past from someone else.. .. takes only seconds, and it is done.. Meanwhile, we continue to work with them in between wormings, and have about a 50% success rate this year with them.. time and patience is the way to go..

I would be really afraid that it would make them start resisting taking the bit.
My horse is very difficult to deworm with paste dewormer, he rears up and is a maniac about that and the strangles vaccine.

Luckily, he is also a food hound, so I am able to mix his paste dewormer in with his food and he will eat all of it. I asked on here and to the vet and everyone says that it is fine to do it that way as long as they will clean their feed up. He gets a wet mash, so it is easier to mix in.

I would be worried that the horse wouldn't take the bit again too...

My gelding is Carris' gelding's twin in a gaited breed and some white on him.
He too will rear and be totally stupid some times. What I did last time was give him an apple and while he had the apple in the tip of his mouth still...I just put the wormer in the back of his mouth. It seemed to work! He spit out the apple and gummed the wormer. I gave him the apple again after and he was really well behaved.

They work about, let's see, one time.

If you have problems, try deworming every day with applesauce or molasses (I prefer the apple sauce). My horses just start sucking down the contents of the tube. When you deworm, squirt it in, let them swallow it, and then give them a dose of applesauce. If they associate the tube with good stuff, even if you give them a shot of bad stuff once in awhile, they don't seem to mind.

Sounds like snake oil to me...

Huh? I've never heard of a 'wormer bit'. That just sounds weird. I have to agree with everyone else, it sounds like it could cause problems for bitting later on. One of the mares is hard to worm, here. It just requires a combination patience, and speed.

the device works really well for me. The "bit" is black plastic, his bit is golden. He knows the difference. It hasn't made a diffence in the bitting.

I would be very hesitant about using a worming bit. I think you could very much sour a horse to the bit in general if you're sticking it in his mouth to give him icky stuff.

Recycle old wormer tubes, put some applesauce or vanilla frosting into the tubes and start "worming" your horse with the tasty wormer. That might help soften your horse up to the idea of wormer.

I have one that is a bugger to worm, so I give her a tube of vanilla frosting wormer, then she's lolling her tongue around for more... I slip her the real wormer and then give her another tube of vanilla frosting. Horses seem to remember the last step in the pattern. She remembers most of the time wormer tubes are yummy!

wormer bit

I have one and use it on two of my horses. I have never had a problem with them not taking the bit later. If I have help then I don't use it. My daughter used it and she was 12 at the time. She had no problems with worming.

Dayum a gold bit!
I got one in a box of stuff but no I worm the old fashioned way.
I work with them until I can slip it in their mouth.
I also use liquid wormer a lot and they munch it right down.
