Question A dry and corse mane.

My mini gelding has a very dry mane. It is also kinda corse. He used to play with the other studs out in the field before we got him gelding and it made his mane very uneven. I finally decided to trim it down and get it all about the same length. I dont know if this helped in making it this way or not.

My dilemma is that with winter coming on I want something that I can just put on and leave it on regulary without having to wash it. I just need something to help this out and make it softer and healthier. His tail is also a bit dry but not as bad as his mane. If anyone has any ideas to help this out please let me know.

Cowboy Magic.

I LOVE their shampoo, conditioner, detangler...everything by them is fantastic.

Yes, Cowboy magic is great. Also adding Omega 3 to diet will help the mane, tail, and coat. I love omega horseshine for this.

Ohh, APHA, Omega 3 is also a good idea. I get a suppliment called Platinum Performance and I love it. It is an all around suppliment (mostly omega 3), but it works wonders. Rocket has turned into a different horse, he is moving so much better, his coat is gorgeous and his feet, mane and tail are amazing.

Queen Helene's Cholesterol Conditioner is the best way I have found to get up on a mane and or tail that needs a jump start. Dollar General or Wal-Mart, ethnic hair care section really inexpensive.

It is kinda like the old Alberto VO5 Hot Oil treatments for humans. I take and warm the tube in a cup of hot water for a minute or two...pack it on and work it in real good. Leave it on for about 30 - 60 minutes, then shampoo out and lightly condition.

I use "the pink stuff" in the ethnic hair section of walmart. It's in a pink bottle under varius brands. It works really well. I forgot I had it and put it in my horses mane yesterday (he has a really bushy funky mane) and his mane looks
and feels soo much healthier now.

The colesterol conditioner would probably work too.

My school uses just human conditioner and leaves it in. I think it's gross and doesn't work, honestly. But you know, they aren't my horses so I do what I am told. But a girl who's horses are out in arizona or kansas or something said that you cannot leave conditioner in the mane over there because the dry air will cause the mane/tail to break off.

Dunno, I live in nice humid Tn...

I think it must be a mini thing, dry and course tails. My minis mane is full, and gorgeous, but his tail ...yuk !! It is fine for about 4-5 days after a bath but them its back to being real course. I use the Eqyss cream rinse/conditioner but I will have to try Seerfarms suggestion !!

Spirita I have used the pink oil sheen as well, but prefer the Olive Oil sheen (green can) so much better...seems to work longer.

Barnbum....if you try the cholesterol conditioner, also get a can of the Olive Oil Sheen (Not to be confused with the same only Hairspray) and use it after you shampoo, work it in real good paying close attention to the inside around the tail dock. I think you will be amazed at how well this stuff works.

I'd stay away from anything with silicone in it as that dries the hair really badly. Cowboy Magic D&S has cyclomethicone , a silicone oil derivative. Showsheen and Lasersheen have silicon as well. Eqyss Mega-tek may helped my old gelding grow a mane, but it may have been the HorseShine that did more than anything else -- I was giving both and his mane grew in soft and fast. His forelock did not, so maybe it was the Mega-tek... or maybe he just had bad "forelock" genes.

I agree, Cowboy Majic and Ventrolin products are full of Silicone.

Thanks for all the help. I may try some of these. I gave him a bath today. I used horse shampoo on him (shampooed his tail twice just because it was dirty). Used regular human conditioner on him, left it on for a couple minutes and washed it out. Then I sprayed, showsheen on to help with any tangles. Then, when it dryed I used some leave-in Mane & Tail conditioner on it. After all that was done his hair felt TONS better. I just dont know how long it will stay that way.

If it gets dry quick again I will try these other ideas. Well, I might just try them anyways

Putting some ground flax in his feed will help give him a nice mane and tail and nice coat aswell.

Also cowboy magic works great and doesn't freeze scince its oily unlike other products you can get(I've used cowboy magic for years and my horses never had dry coarse manes actually they always had the nicest manes in the barn)

...and yeast is supposed to do what for a mane?

I use Pinks Lotion on mine as well. It is an Ethnic product and works just great.
I dilute it and spray on.

the yeast in the beer helps ad shine...beer in hair helps lock in shine and moisture...
also vodka will help clean hair..it strips the hair of build up of products and scuzz...both in equine and human...

Getting a proper diet into him will help out alot aswell.

My all time favorite is OmgaHorseShine.

You could also try wrapping the mane in a oilve oil base product, or just olive oil. Let sit for a day, then rinse with luke warm-cool water as the warmer water tends to dry hair even more.[/

Even though people swear by well known equine conditioners and detanglers I've actually found that for a dry mane, natural oils work best. Many detanglers on the market are silicon based and may detangle well and make the hair shine but dry it out. If you go to a health food store and purchase "Natural oils" Tisserland makes a great one, it should do the trick. Put a small amt. in the mane and leave it in. Also baby oil works wonders!

I use a mix of tea tree oil, aloe vera juice - not gel, avocado butter, shea butter, jojoba oil, and water.

Whipped up in a mixer it makes a great mane and tail conditioner.
