What should I use?

Hi everyone I need some advice please. One of my geldings is in a 20x20 mare motel type stall. He urinates in 1 spot. The ground just won't absorb anymore so it is a puddle of stagnet urine. YUK! I was thinking about shavings but I was afraid they would just blow away. Or what about cat litter? What do you use to soak up urine?

Cat litter will turn into stinky mud...it's made of clay.

How about half - burying a bucket there with some shavings or gravel in it to prevent splashing...then all you have to do is empty the bucket and you're stall is dry Or just put a muck tub there with shavings/gravel in it.

or just locate a drain right there.

If the ground is that saturated, chances are that you will not be able to get it dried out. I would dig the spot out, also digging an additional foot around it....add some gravel at the bottom and then fill with sand till about 4 inches from the top. Pack with stall floor dirt and reshaving your stall. The sand and gravel should allow for better drainage. Just make sure that you remove all the wet shavings daily from that area.

Try using pelleted pine bedding. Buy yourself about 4 bags, plus a couple bags of shavings, so you get some control over the problem spot.
It is incredibly absorbent.
Clean the stall and pull all the dry bedding to the sides of the stall, then spread the whole 30 lb bag of pelleted bedding on the muck/wet spot. Let it stand and absorb for a couple hours.
You might want to invest in a bag of Sweet PDZ to control the odor. You won't really need that too much after you begin to use the pellets regularly.
If necessary, remove ALL that wet bedding and ADD more pelleted bedding in the same spot. Once it dries up some, continue to mix your shavings and pelleted bedding, putting the pellets specifically on the wet spots in his stall.
I generally put a HEAPING horsefeed scoop, or 2 scoops, of the pellets on top of my horse's wet spot every 2 days and it TOTALLY controls the problem.
I have found it to be the MOST ABSORBENT bedding for that problem.
The ONLY drawback about it is, over time, it can become a bit dusty.
But you should be able to control that problem, just continue to also use shavings.
Good luck, Redboy

I second the pelleted. My mom has a mare that is a peeaholic and she has a problem keeping her stall dry. Her stalls are a packed sand base with shaving over top. She has started putting pelleted pine in the wet spots and then covering with shaving. She swears by it!

Pool grade Diatomateous earth will power the pee out of there.
I use it at the gate openings too when they get mucky.

That's pelleted wood. It also works wells for kitty litter (I buy "feline Pine" from Wally World b/c it's flushable!)

Let us know how it works for you!

Mac has the same problem!

I used lots of pelleted pine thingys, lots of shavings and put that in a few spots to try to encourage him to pee in 4 different spots. It has worked rather well so far.
