I agree and thought so too. Pine Tar is for moisture. I can only tell ya what I read.... Did I read it wrong ?? I don't think so b/c I read it a few times b/c my though always was that Pine Tar is for moisture.

Ok, back to the OP ............ Quick picking on me !!

Thanks for the response all! I'm going to start out using it about 2 times per week, and then if needed, I'll start applying it more

We use hooflex and rainmaker for cracked feet - make sure you apply it all the way to the coronet band for best results. They both also work really well on pasture rash and such (after scabbing of course) it helps keep the scab moisturized thus allowing the hair to grow back in the natural color instead of getting those ugly white spots where you don't want them.

I've had good luck by feeding approx 1/2 cup of corn oil daily to the feed. It seems to improve the new growth.

I like to use Horseshoer's Secret hoof conditioner. It's clear, smells decent and works great! It has helped one of our horse's hooves really, really well. She doesn't need shoes any longer because of it!
I don't know how the Absorbine works but I've liked every single Absorbine product I've ever used. I don't think the hoof conditioner would be any different.
Never liked the Rain Maker. Smells like old bacon grease and goes on brown and yucky.
Good luck.

re:hoof maker

My guy was getting those surface cracks as well. I have used hoof flex, but I do prefer Hoof Maker. I have been using it twice a week, and the surface cracks are growing out. I have had very postive results with Hoof Maker.

I know this post has been up a couple weeks, BUT, I do have to comment,
I have religiously used "Hoof Flex" this summer (as well as, this past year, pretty regularly b/c I accidently ordered a HUGE tub of it),
And Red just had his feet done (every 6 weeks),...., NO CHIPS!!!.
That is very UNCOMMON for him, especially in the summer. This summer hasn't been quite as dry as the previous 2 were, but dry none the less.
He has white feet, and they tend to chip at the toe pretty badly by the time he needs a trim, and as well, I have been riding somewhat regularly.
Since I only trail ride, we are on the road, gravel often.
Even my farrier noticed how good they looked.
So, I have ALL GOOD things to say about Hoof Flex. I love it!! Redboy

Yes I do during dry times and only once a week. Great results.

Have been using it for 40+ years and swear by it. My farrier did say that over-use softens the foot too much, so go light.

I do know not to over-use. I had a friend of a friend who thought the more the better, and the horses feet got WAY too soft-hard lesson for them to learn!

Does that stuff work on chipping, cracked hooves? It has been raining non stop and my boy's hooves have me worried. I went out and bought an oral supplement called Farriers formula and have been using a type of Hoof flex. I wanted to know if that was the right thing. His hooves need to be dry it seems like??? He is pastured 100% of the time. He has a lot of shade but we havent built a run in yet.

The Hooflex I am using is a moisturizer...you would not want to use it on hooves that were chipping due to excess moisture. Talk w/ your farrier, but most likely you need to get some type of sealant (sp?) that keeps a balance in the feet.

Your Farriers Formula will not work if its an environmental reason as to why the hooves are in bad shape. Also, a hoof supplement will not make immediate improvements, it takes 6-8 months to see any difference as the foot grows from the coronet band.

If the horse is pastured all the time and the feet have no where to dry out, then maybe consider getting something built so the horse can go give his feet a place to dry out. Sand and grass all have moisture and will be absorbed thru the hoof. This time of the year for Fl is prone for bad hooves.

Barnbum, I know its really bothering me. They are going to build something soon. My sister and hubby just moved in and they are looking into run-ins. I know those supplements take a while. He used to be kept in a stall 23 hours a day(previous show barn) and than at my old barn for 10 hours a day and now he is out all the time. I dont know what to do. There are times of the day that it is dry out there but not for very long. My sister asked if we built a run in will he stand in it?? I cant answer that. Cause what if we did and than he doesnt? Should be build stalls instead?
