frontline spray

I'm sure many of you use frontline or a similar product for your dogs. I have 4 big dogs and recently discovered frontline spray. It can be purchased online through jeffers and comes in a small (not sure oz) bottle for $25 or a large for $50. The small bottle lasted several months for my 4 dogs. Bascially it's the same stuff as the spot on you just spray the dog wet once a month. I originally bought it to spray in my horses ears so they wouldn't get ticks and it works great for that too. I've used it for over 6 months on my dogs and no fleas. It works great and is much cheaper than the spot-on.

do you spray it everywhere? Can you touch your pet afterwards? How long is it supposed to stay on? (or is it more like the equivalent of bug spray?)

yes you spray it everywhere. It says to use gloves and rub your pets hair the wrong way as you spray. It dries very quickly and you can touch you pet. It says the dog can swim or be bathed regularly just like the regular frontline.

I have used the frontline spot treatment for over a year, and my dog still has fleas all the time. I am not very happy with the results at all.

but I wonder if this stuff will work if the spot stuff doesn't

I saw it (Frontline Spray) advertised for the first time about a week ago in a magazine. I have not tried it. I have found that the fleas around here have become immune to Frontline (two different veterinarians commented on this). I have switched to K9 Advantix for the dogs and Revolution for the cats. I also read where you can use certain horsesprays on dogs. I'm wondering about that too. Fleas........what are they good for?

I am switching to Advantix as well.

I called Mariel(who makes frontline) to ask why my dog still had fleas and they told me "it is a flea killer not a repellant"

so I asked "so then what good does it do"
Mariel: "it kills the fleas before they can lay eggs in your house"
Me: "but he gets new fleas everytime he goes outside and always has fleas"
Mariel: yeah, it's not a repellant
Me: So I pay you $10/month for my dog to have fleas?

From one who works in the vet field, I use Advantix on my dog. Our clinic is not even selling Frontline's monthly topicals for dogs any longer, we have replaced it with a new, more effective product. From what our vets have described, Frontline's basic drawback is this: its main ingredient has been used in the US for so many decades that certain "species" of flea have become immune to its effects. So, yes, in a nutshell it isn't working well anymore.

As far as what the Merial reps told you DoBeSassy, they could have been a little more helpful, I'll agree! Basically what happens with Frontline is that it kills fleas by paralyzation; the flea injests some of the chemical, becomes paralyzed, and cannot eat, breed, etc. It dies. Great! However, what the reps might have explained a little more is the "repellant" concept. They are right, the product is not meant to repel fleas, it is meant to kill them, as are countless other flea/tick products out there. So, if there are fleas in your yard, or home and they jump on your dog you will see them; the existance of these "new" fleas is often misconstrued as a lack of effectiveness with the product, but once they injest the chemical they will die as well.

Tons of clients have come in our clinic, especially this year, and expressed concerns about the discrepancies in coverage and continuity in flea/tick products, and I will admit that though some work better than others, no one product is going to take care of everything all the time. Our clinic owner describes it this way: if you take a test with three parts and you get two correct and one incorrect, what score are you given? A 66, you fail the test. Flea prevention is a three part test: the pet, the yard, the home. If one only treats one or two areas of the flea environment (pet, yard, or home), but not all three...you fail the test.

We still carry the Frontline spray, but I cannot attest to its effecity. Advantix, in my opinion, has been the most effective product this season. Plus, it has added ingredients proven to repel flies and mosquitoes, as the owner of a dog who's ears suffer from horrendous flys strikes, I can't find a product that can top it!

We've sold this in my vet clinic for years and have found it very effective, just not with ticks. We always recommend to apply the spray the same way you do the once a month dose tube. Spray one pump per pound in a dixie cup and then pour it on the skin of your dog or cats neck. The only difference between the bottle and the tube is that the tube is oil based and the bottle is alchol (sp?) based.

I've never had too much trouble with fleas and have usually used frontline. I'll have to try the advantix though if I see any fleas. Anyone have any thoughts on repelling those little gnats from the dogs and horses?

dcs- we can't treat all 70 acres that can be affected, and we ride all throught it so he always has fleas. I need something that will also repell them. Is there anything out there worth while that will also repell at least to some degree

I've used Revolution since the day I got my dogs/cats[in 2005], and have never had a problem with ticks/fleas/mange/ear mites/hearworms. As the product states "it kills/prevents" all of those nasty critters on cats/dogs....it kills on contact within 10 mins of any fleas/ticks that land on them, so thats the great thing about the product...... But the only downfall on the product is the cost I can only afford a 6 month supply for $75-80[depends on clinic] rather then the whole 12 month supply for a whole year, which would've cost $100+...but it still worth w/e the cost is cause my dog is protected and is flea/heartworm fee she's happy shes healthy, thats all the matters to me

I don't use the other brand-names because they don't interest me,thought I know they are good to use but are NOT as effective as Revolution -

Anyways, if it comes down to Advantix/Frontline or Revolution, my choice would be Revolution.

I used the spray when I live in ga and is NEVER worked!! I switched to frontline topspot plus. This has done the trip and works great on everyone. I buy the giant dog size and divide it up between all my little dog and cats to. The dog stuff top spot is the same thing as the cat and it is BY far cheaper buying the giant dog size and dividing it up than buying a pack per animal per size!!!

We had a horrendous flea explosion this year.....inside and outside. It was literally driving humans and animals nuts. We did the yard with a chemical OTHER than pyrethrins, and followed up with dicotimous (sp?) eath, which is not a chemical, is cuts the bugs up when they come in contact with it. Used the dust in the house and on the critters.........and if I had to wash the animals everyday to kill the fleas, ok....................but that combo of stuff worked for us.
No frontline or other chemicals worked.
