I was talkng about the Continuex havng a colic program as well. I have been feeding strongid C for several years. With 10 horses on it, one is a draft so he takes a lttle more, it took me 3 five gallon buckets of the stongd C at 46.95 a bucket that was one month. The other was 151. for the bag and I got a week or 2 longer out of it.
The Continuex is the same as the stongid 2x but 15.00 cheaper for the 50 pound and it comes in a big old tub.

I asked my vet <Michigan vet> and he said to use daily wormers with caution, as you can build a resistant strain of worms by not continuallly changing products. I was just wondering if anyone had any information on that, or had anyone comment on it. Obviously, you need to know what parasites are a problem and when, as well as what product to use for maximum effect.
I'd love to use daily wormer and additional wormers on rotation, but I'd like to be sure I'm making the best possible choices. Thanks! Sheila |

I did ask my vet about that, Sheila, and his explanation was that giving it daily does not give them a chance to get a stronghold, so it reduces the risk of that happening, as opposed to waiting until they are full of worms, and then trying to kill them all.

My vet said that it was pretty much a lot of bull. They can get resistant to any wormer, and that the daily keeps it in them and it is constanly working. I use a rotation a paste in the Winter time for the bots and other that are present then. I also will hit them with Zimectrin once in a while during the other months that they are on this product. I have been using it for a few years and at this point never has issue with it. Never had worms either when their stool is checked.

Thanks for the input =)
I'm thinking that I will do a "test" in my own herd and see what happens. Now, given that 4 horses in a very closed environment isn't exactly a drug trial..LOL, but I'm thinking I'll do a series of fecal floatation exams and daily wormer and see the result. Given that specific types of gastro parasites (i.e. tapes, bots, strongyles) are best controlled with different classes of wormers, I'll have to devise a schedule for dealing with those not covered with daily feed through wormer. I think it is a start =))) Thanks! |

Just make sure they don't eat each others feed. Whomever gets the daily wormer, make sure they eat all of it and not chased away from their feed.
