Western Bareback Pad - Best Friend Equine Supply, Inc.

- Product Info -
Manufacturer: Best Friend Equine Supply, Inc. http://www.bestfriendequine.com/westernstyle.html
Model Name: Western Bareback Pad
Product Type/Product purpose: Bareback pad
Price and Purchase info: Retails for $79.95 at the Best Friend Equine Supply, Inc. site. I purchased this product NEW on e-bay for $70.00.

- Product Description -

  • Breathable synthetic suede fabric top.
  • Non-slip neoprene bottoms and girths.
  • High-density foam padding throughout.
  • Additional cushioning in withers area, contoured to fit the horse's back, providing a superior fit and appearance.
  • Convenient side pockets with a free water bottle.
  • Easy-care. To clean: Brush off with a gentle brush and then wipe with a damp cloth.

Pros: Non slip backing and girth make this the most secure bareback pad I've ever ridden. Even after a 45 minute ride, this pad was still secure, and stayed put, even when I was sliding off.

Cons: I can't think of any.

Would you recommend this to a friend?: I would recommend this bareback pad to anyone who is interested in riding bareback!

Other comments: I purchased this pad to ride with my son, who's disabled, so stability was my first priority. I didn't want a pad that would slip as I was balancing myself along with trying to balance my son. This bareback pad is exactly what I was looking for.

Overall Product rating:
10

There is also a pocket on the other side of this pad to hold the water bottle! That would be great for a long ride on a hot day.

Is there a specific reason why it is advertised as a western bareback pad?

I'm not sure why it's advertised as a "Western" bareback pad. Maybe the shape/style of the pad? They also offer an "English" bareback pad, I believe. It's cut away in the back, like an english saddle pad.

I think you are right on that one -- the english pad is more the shape of an "english saddle". I like the looks of the "western" one though and the fact that you can put a water bottle in the pocket - handy to have. Am going to have to take a serious look at the western one. I like to ride bareback but need a little something to hold on to besides the mane.
Thanks for the review and bringing this product to my attention.

I got one of these on Ebay and really like it. I loaned it a friend last night who rides english. She declared it felt like an english saddle. Only thing is that you still get a sweaty underside.

Can anyone tell me how this compares to the Parelli style bareback pads out there? I need to buy a bareback pad soon and I'm trying to figure out which one is best. Thanks!

I've never ridden in the Parelli one, but this one is a H*ll of a lot cheaper!

Parrelli pads are suede. I have a suede pad (not Parrelli) and I love it. My girls love it too, becuse they stick to it like little sand burrs!!

Well, i decided that for the price on this pad it would be hard to go wrong. It also has a suede top. I've only used the Parelli pads before in my lessons, so as soon as I get this one I'll be able to tell you which I like better.

I'm heading to that link right now. I'm hoping it will go big enough for a draft. I'm dying for one but they just don't make them that large without it being huge $$. THANKS for the heads up

Mine's here! Finally got it yesterday and tried it for the first time today. First of all, this made a HUGE difference in how secure I felt while riding bareback. I'd been doing some walk/trot work without a pad and felt like I was going to fall if I took more than just a few trot steps at a time. With the pad, I was able to comfortably trot a huge circle and still felt relatively balanced. However my legs are now killing me.

Pro's
Nice and sticky
Good looking pad (I got the tan and it looks great against Oakie's dark brown color)
Price
Me and the pad stayed put
Water bottle holder is going to make me the envy of the barn come summertime.

Con's
Hard to cinch tightly
Little strap on the girth that holds the extra girth strap was broken when mine arrived. For me, this isn't a big deal since Oakie could care less about the extra strap occasionally touching his leg.
Doesn't seem to be padded as nice as the parelli bareback pad. The parelli bareback pad has about a half inch of nice thick felt padding. This was more like a dense foam. But because of the huge price difference I prefer this pad to the parelli pads I've used before. If I were planning on riding exclusively in the bareback pad I'd probably get the Parelli pad, but since I just plan on using the pad for about 20 minutes 2 or 3 times a week for seat building excercises, this will be perfect for that.

Overall, a very nice pad and an absolute bargain compared to some other pads. Thanks for the tip Dani!

Can I ask some advice please, at the moment I have a saddle that desn't fit me or my horse, but she will probably put on weight, and I for sure need to lose some

Would a bareback pad be a short term solution, I like the idea of spending $70 or so, rather than forking out for another sadlle? I'm not sure if it would be OK for her back, having a heavy weight rider on a pad?

Can someone tell me the measurements of the pad, especially front to back?
