Love it. It is always in my rotation. I use the dog safeguard as well and love it. Excellent wormer!

It is a good wormer. Not very broad spectrum so does not hit all the types of worms-bots for one.
You can also buy the bags of Safeguard originally marketed for cattle and feed those[alfalfa flavored] and that makes it very inexpensive to worm with.

Really? Thats good to know, is it just in a bag in the cattle section of the store?

Did a quick search and found these prices[you could look and find better I am sure] but for our purpose..

http://www.petvetsupply.com/wrmhhrs002.html

http://www.useful-items.com/Merchant...egory_Code=MED

First link is for EquiBits-which is the same Safeguard that is in the other for the cattle-look at the label...right at 15 per dose for 1250 lb horse.
Then the 10 pound bulk-and it would do 7 wormings for 48 dollars...right at 7 dollars.

You can also buy the big tubes of Safeguard paste marketed for cattle at a lower price.

We do a Safe-Guard Power Pak ( double dose once a day for 5 days) once a year (my vet recomends it for really cleaning them out and is safe way to do a really good worming on underweight or poor condition horses) I have found it is a lot cheaper to do this with the large cattle tubes instead of the horse tubes.

We bought a gelding that was very underweight and eat up with rain rot. Over about 5 months, I wormed him with several different wormers and although he had picked up weight, it wasn't nearly enough. Vet suggested I power pak him, and in 1 months time after he looked like a new horse. Wish I had before and after pictures to show you because the difference was amazing. Now I make it part of my rotation on my horses and do it once a year. Although a single dose of safe-guard doesn't get bots or tapeworms, when you power pak, it does.

Kathy how does it do that? I am not sure that tapes can be affected by anything but praziquantyl[sorry SP}
The different worms are affected by the differing effects of the CLASS of wormer used.
Some are wide ranging like the Ivermectrin and some very worm specific and they leave behind some types that do not react to the chemical action of that particular wormer. Hence the rotation being recommended to get all[as well as avoid resistance]
I am just trying to understand how a wormer that usually cannot affect a type of worm-could do so when used in a lerger and more often type of dosing?
Tapes are darn hard to get killed. Only visible at specific times in the lifecycle too and my not even show up on a fecal.
I agree the PowerPack can do amazing things for a horses condition.

Where do you get the cattle wormer? I bet you have researched the best price for the big tubes.

We get our safe guard in the big cattle tubes at TSC in the cattle section, it's like 15 dollars cheaper and does LOTS of horses! the only draw back I see on it, is it's so big you need the gun (like a cocking guy sp?) to use it, and if your horse isn't really great about worming, it can be a pain!

But they do have the medium size tubes as well, the are regular surigne sp? type and they still save alot of money that way...

Going on what my vet told me here Tovero. Also, they sell a safeguard powerpak for dogs and when I read the label on it, they also say the power pak gets tapeworms. (I do also use a wormer specific for tape worms in my rotation) Again, just takeing what he told me at face value. Would take a smarter brain than mine to explain how it works.

I get the cattle tubes at my local feed store (small independent) and it runs me about 20.00 less per horse to do it this way. Just have to read the table on the tube and dose per weight. You have to have a gun (looks like a caulking gun) to use it. The feed store gave me mine, but even if you had to buy it the first time, the savings would make it worth it.

Kathy G my vet also says that. Same for dogs, but I use the liquid form for them.

Tape care plus by farnam is just a high dose of Pyrantel pamoate. It gets tapeworms too. I believe the safeguard is similar, it is the higher extended dose that gets them.

Yes i found that the Pyrantel Pamoate gets tapes too-but I thought Safeguard was fenbendazole ? I did not see that as being effective for tapes. Maybe the PowerPak for dogs has different chemicals?
Anyhow here is a great link on the classes of wormers and what they hit.
