I leave my MC in the barn with manure in it and we have no flies (fly eliminators -- great for taking care of filth flies). Drawing flies was one of my main concerns about leaving a spreader full of manure, but it has been no problem at all (and we park the spreader right by the door we use to enter the barn). If we let the spreader get piled pretty high in the warm weather, it will start to compost and smell "hot" though. That's why we try to dump every week, week and a half.

Our MC is ground driven (although they do make them with PTO drive). We bought the 37+, but they make a smaller one that can be pulled by an ATV, golf cart, or riding mower (lawn tractor type). I can push/pull mine up and down the alleyway (they are pretty light until they are full), but we just use a muck bucket on a cart. The smallest MC won't be as small and light as the NS for sure (I think the NS weights about 100# and the MC closer to 400#).

So TMom, do you tow your NS with anything or do you tow it by human power?

RidgeView, I like your farm name! We had been trying to pick a farm name for 12 years, and Ridge View was one of the names we considered (since we live on a mountain ridge).

I pull it with my mini-she has a blast!

No I use a lawn tractor. Honestly it is balanced and light enough to pull by hand. That is what I do-I roll it into the stalls by hand to fill it-then hook it up to the little lawnmower.

Newer Spreader

Thanks so much for the advice, what I am looking for is an easier way to clean stalls but more than that to help our newly formed pasture to thrive? Can anyone speak to how the pasture does once a manure spreader is used? Did you notice a noticable fuller, thicker pasture? And more than the pasture can I spread on my regular lawn?

Thanks Fishing trex!

We too live on a ridge that on antique town maps was referred to as "Break Neck Ridge" which did not sound like a great name for a horse farm! So we live on a ridge and we have a view...hence the name!

Ah, no, Break Neck Ridge is probably not a great name for a horse farm! Antique maps in this area refer to where we live as Canon Still House Road/Ridge. Apparently, during the Civil War, there were not only canons around, but a nice still on the spring at the end of our driveway where the soldiers like to hang out. Like you, I wasn't too keen on Canon Still House Ridge -- was afraid people would think we made moonshine instead of raising horses.

I have been spreading manure for two years. I don't see the "immediate green up" or thickness like I did when I was using nitrogen fertilizer. This year, due to little rain, I haven't seen much of anything with the manure (except I can apply it to the areas the horses like to graze down to nothing, forcing them onto the taller but less tasty grass in the pastures). The manure will help your pasture or your yard, but it probably won't be the same as regular fertilizer -- hey, but it's way cheaper (I won't say "free" since a lot of money goes in one end and out the other of a horse).

I also know that whatever you feed, gets redistributed into your field. So, sometimes it can introduce weeds.
But, overall, I love my MC spreader, I don't know WHAT I would do without it.
Simple, fast, clean, NO PROBLEM!! RB

I love my newer spreader. Pull it with either the 4 wheeler (ATV) or the Jonh Deer mower (small yard ride on mower).

assembly

My husband put ours together in the living room on Saturday. Its still sitting there... He didn't have any trouble at all putting it together but it did take 2-3 hours to put it all together.

We made sure we had every single part and all the tools needed to put it together. We counted & sorted all the nuts and bolts into individual piles and labeled each pile to make it easier. He could say, "Hand me two As and eight Ds. There are little red and blue stickers on a couple of pieces to indicate which is the inside or outside of a part. I peeled the protectice white plastic off the parts then immediately put the little blue and red stickers back on the parts so I didn't risk confusing the sides.

Haven't used it yet. My kids are home from college so I'll wait until next week to fire up the Deere and tackle to compost piles. I only have 2 1/2 acres and a small quarterhorse and a pony.

don't know if they still post the warning since the new owners have company

!!do not back up with the wheel drives engaged!!

also, if you get a lot of hay mixed in....the agitator really helps. the Newer Spreader does not handle lots of wet hay a little is fine.

keep a rubber hammer in Deere to hit those wheel drives. Hard on toes if you have on tennies.

get a tractor pull pin 1/2"X 4" with a oval handle and a package of 2-4 safety clips.

Put hitch pin in from bottom first. Much easier to put in and take out safety pin
