The Man Who Listens to Horses

I believe books are a product as well. If this should be moved to another section, mods, please feel free to do so

I just picked up a mint condition hardcover book titled "The Man Who Listens to Horses" Monty Roberts. It was at a yard sale down the road for $1.00.

Has anyone read this? What are your opinions on this book?

Ditto to the two above!

But you can probably sell it on ebay for far more than you paid for it.

Edited to say three above, slow trigger finger

Oooookay so I take it that folks don't think much of Monty Roberts. Or you are all pulling my leg It's hard to tell from just written words.

Miss Leanne, thank you for your comment, it was the most helpful

I think I'll give it a read. Thanks for your posts, folks!

I just finished reading it (as far as I could get, anyway). Let's just say he's not the most humble guy ...

Hes a little boring, but he says some good stuff too, just not a lot of it. I can't stand to read his books, but I have a video of his that was ok. I will probably never watch it again....Want it...I'll sell it to you , for one dollar (and the shipping )

Well, I have read the book, but I read THIS http://horsewhispersandlies.com/ book first..

Just my opinion.. But I don't really believe the Man who "listens" to horses!

if you read it as kind of 'fiction with a mildly factual base' instead of 'non-fiction', it can be entertaining.

but I certainly wouldn't call it a super 'training manual' or anything. But I will say this for the guy: he's got a good eye for conformation, and he's got a good eye for making some cash.

I really enjoyed reading it. Very relaxing. I didn't look at it as a training manual or anything like that. Just read and enjoy.

I read it when I was about 20, and thought it was neat, but agreed with what most of the others have said, not the most humble guy, and to take it with a grain of salt. I even read "Shy Boy" I think he claims that that horse "chose" to come in from the wild - well, read that one next and see what you think - lol. He did a demo in Edmonton, and because I lived a couple blocks from the venue and was curious, I went. I was really disappointed, and really didn't believe that the horses he worked with were not random horses he'd never met (which was what was claimed). It seemed so staged - not to say that it was for sure, I don't want to get myself in trouble , but I felt pretty ripped off

Read the book, see what you think, and take from it what you can. For what you paid, you're likely to get $1 worth of useful info from it anyhow

I went to one of his "training seminars" also (years ago when he was so hot). I wanted to see what the big deal was. I too was extremely disappointed. Not even the useful information was revolutionary and it was like being at a circus side show, he was far more interested in selling you one of his over priced products than in teaching anyone anything.

Yeah..well that whole Shyboy thing really frosted my cornflakes. He adopted 3 mustangs from the BLM and had them for a couple mos before he sent Shyboy up to his Buddy's place to film his "documentary"
He also used a horse that was in his place for training to run Shyboy down. Horse ended up lame and the people sued him.
Do a search on lawsuits involving Monty..interesting read.
I have a big issue listening to him/about him. I have zero respect for the man.
Yes Horse Whispers and Lies is another great read-shocking really. Written by a close relative and a real eye opener.

I made it through about 1/3, and then it lost my interest. Even considered as fiction, I found it pretty boring.

But hey, if it floats someone's boat, it's a dollar spent wisely...know what I mean?
