Product Review - Defender Fly Mask PICS ADDED!!!!

- Product Info -
Model Name: Defender Fly Mask

Price and Purchase info: $5.99 from www.horse.com
http://www.horse.com/products/product.aspx?sku=BUM17

- Product Description -
Fleece-lined ear opening, double Velcro closure, and soft neoprene at the nose to prevent rubbing. Come in three sizes.

Pros: Truely does not rub, fits well and stays on fairly well. I put one on my monster 3 year old and his still looks new after two months.

Cons: Sizes run large. I bought two mediums and they fit my full size QH's, the larges would have been way too big. I just bought two smalls and I'll see how they fit my smaller full size QH's. No size for yearlings or smaller.

Would you recommend this to a friend?: YES, definitly worth the money at half the price of other brands.

Other comments: They also offer other styles including longer noses and ears.

Overall Product rating: 8(out of 10)

I just purchased a *Defender* fly mask and fly sheet about a month ago. Love the mask, HATE the fly sheet. I actually gave it away (too much $$ tosend it back!!) Fly sheet was a VERY heavy plastic mesh (advertised as light weight) and the buckles were snaps. Not horsey friendly at all. I got it thru Country Supply and it was the $39.99 sheet.

I got my Defender size small masks in today. They fit my smaller headed QH mare quite nicely and fit my big headed running bred QH yearling a bit loose but acceptable.
Most of my horses rarely take them off except for the one big gooberhead, he can get out of anything so he doesn't count. But I will say that instead of tearing them in half, he just slips out of these and doesn't damage them.

I am quite happy with them especially since they cost less than half of what the Supermasks cost!

Beth, can you photo the way it looks on one of your horses?

ETA - particularly the underside of the jaw/cheeks?

Here's pictures as requested:

Size Small
Kitty wearing a size small, she is a 14'3" QH with an average sized head/jowl for a QH mare of that size. Fly mask fits great around the jowls and length but could be a touch larger around her ears. She doesn't seem to mind it though. Rub marks are from her old fly mask.

Marie wearing a size small. Marie is a large very TB looking QH yearling filly, long narrow head with little jowls. Shaped much like a TB head.
Mask fits perfect around the ears and in length but is a bit large around her jowls.

Size Mediums
JR is a nearly 16 hand grade pinto gelding, his head is shaped like an Arab but he has the jowls of a QH. Fits him nearly perfect. Straps are a bit longer than he needs.

Red is a 15'3" hand average build QH mare. Average sized head and average sized jowls. Fly mask fits her perfect!

According to the catalog description for these fly masks Red and JR should be wearing a Large. Kitty should be wearing a medium and Marie should be wearing a small. So they are sized a bit large for the average horse owner.

my cousin uses this type on Blue, they seem to hold up to stallion shenanigans fairly well.

The one that is on the paint has been tested and tried about the best of any of them! Yes, he gets it off daily but he can get out of anything I put on him. Including a closed front blanket with belly strap and two leg straps and not undo the straps at all.
I've found his hanging in trees, trampled in the mudd and watched him fling and stomp on it. A quick dip in the stock tank and it's as good as new. Unlike the Supermasks which he just shreds because the don't have the elastic give in them that these do.

Do they make them with covered ears?

Yep, they also make them in longer nose styles in both ears and earless'. They're a bit more money of course.

Blue I believe has the longer nose model. But his head is shorter, so it goes halfway down his face... but it fits him and keeps the flies out of his eyes.
