Item of the Week- #1 Starting Bits

Okay, so the item for this week is starting bits. So what bit do you use for starting your young horses?

Just a reminder, here are the guidelines for the reviews http://forum.horsetopia.com/viewtopic.php?t=18651 and here is the product review template http://forum.horsetopia.com/viewtopic.php?t=18955

Smooth snaffles of some sort. They work great in lines and are good at getting the horses used to bit pressure in lines and under saddle. Reinsman is a good brand. I usually prefer the full cheek or D ring snaffles myself.

I like reinsman bits too, would you like to write a review on one?

Normally I would say yes but I haven't bought a new bit in ages. You know how they all sit and get used forever. So I couldn't do the pricing on them.

One more thing -- remember that if you would like to post a review to start a new topic!

I like to start with a o-ring or full cheek snaffle(depending on the horse), preferably made of sweet iron with copper inlay.

I'm not a trainer by any means, but I have heard that O-rings encourage a horse to elevate his head, while a D-ring encourages them to flex at the poll; thus keeping their head low.

Does anybody know anything about this.

I was going to ad that Tractor Supply carries Reinsman so you could pop in there to check out the price if you want to do the product review.

I prefer a halter or bosal for as long as I can use it.

I use a full cheek. It doesn't slip through the mouth as easily. Especially when you're tying their heads and lunging. Although riding wise you shouldn't have too much problem with bit slipage unless you have the wrong size.

I've never noticed a diference in preformance between an o-ring and a d-ring.I also like a nice full cheek snaffle, especially if your horse is stiff when turning.
