I Am So Sad

For the past couple of months a fox family lived under the porch of a house in the town next to mine. I travel this road on my way to the gym in the morning (5:15-5:30 am). I often saw the mama fox walking along the road going "wherever" while her kits stayed under the porch.

It was reported they were there with the thought of maybe relocating them to the woods, but that didn't happen for whatever reason.

I prayed she would survive the motor vehicles also on the road. That was not to be. This morning I saw her lying dead in the road, a real mess. I felt horrible. I think her babies are old enough now to survive on their own, but are still very young. They must be wondering where their mommy is.

That is very sad. I had a family of foxes -- we saw Mom, Dad and 8 kits -- that played in our and in our neighbor's backyard. The kits were nearly full grown, but we found three of them dead on a busy road near our house.

After you watch them and become familiar with their routines, they become "your" foxes, don't they.

Oh no... Oh how very sad. Foxes are one of my favorite animals... They shoudl be old enough but still vulnerable to preditors. Hope they survive ok!! You know they are easy to tame LOL LOL LOL....

Poor babies.. we used to have a family in the woods and I loved seeing the kits by the pond.. they disappeared last year in the drought and we haven't seen any since then...

It is sad when you get used to the wild critters and something happens to them...

Yes; that is true. I looked for the mama every morning. It was one of the bright spots during my drive to the gym.

Aw, I Hate seeing that. For several years a vixen and her kits could be seen along my route to work. SO and I would always vie about who got to see them first. One day, mama was dead in the road....the next day, a babe. Couple days later, SO says, I have something to show you.......it's beautiful, but it will make you sad.

He picked up the remaining kit that had been hit, thrown to the shoulder, dead, but intact, and brought it home, put it in the outside critter fridge til I got home. He was right, it was soooooooooooooo beautiful, just curled up, as if sleeping. It did make me cry. I just looked and looked at that gorgeous little body, trying to memorize every detail. We buried it in the woods.

We have sooo many foxes up here in Alaska! I one time found a beautiful white and brown spotted fox alongside the road, he was dead from a car though

Oh that is so sad! I just love foxes, I think they are totally adorable.

I've always wanted a pet fox, but we aren't allowed to have them here if they are a "native" fox. You can get the Fennec foxes (they are tiny) if you have a permit, but they are really expensive!

Tallyho, reading your story brought tears to my eyes. Unfortunately, these are some of the sad things that happen in life.

How sad to be familiar with an animal only to see it dead in the road.
Thankfully I am situated way back in the woods and see fox, cyote deer turkey every day.
I do hate to see an animal dead in the road.
