Coyotes.

For the last few days, when I go out to feed at about 6:30 or 7 AM, there have been coyotes in my barn area. In the stalls with the horses eating poop. When they see me the don't even budge. I usually grab a shovel, whistle and open the big gate and holler at them and chase them out. They leisurely trot out of the gates and sit infront of them and watch me feed.

We have 3 barn cats which I am concerned about, but they sleep in the feed shed, we have a little door for them in the back so they can sneak in and out. My house cat does escape from time to time, especially at night when I think she is sleeping somewhere. We already lost her sister and mom to coyotes, 2 cats is enough.

But I do not like the coyotes being there. I am worried about my dogs, I have no idea what kind of diseases and stuff they could bring.

San Diego has the worst coyote problems in the U.S. Because San Diego is so widespead, only the inner downtown area is almost free of coyotes. I live in a small township north and inland from San Diego, we are parked right next to a wildlife preserve. But since the October 07 fires, the coyote problems have gotten worse.

Does anyone have any ideas to keep them out? We have goatproof fencing because the old owners had goats, ducks and geese (they did say they lost quite a few to coyotes), but they dig underneath the fencing, that's not working.

I am an avid animal lover as all would know but you cannot allow this. THey are NOT afraid of you so you must shoot them or have them killed or moved. Moved is not smartest idea as they will just come upone someone else. They are not pets and should not be trusted. They will eventually get your cats and I swear I have seen them in action I would not trust them around any horses that were stalled up or somthing to that effect. Coyotoes are survivers. First and foremost. You are in danger going around them. It would be the same with a family of raccoons in the barn. They are not good for you to be around even with a SHOVEL??? I suggest you do something and do not feel bad about it. THere are a lot of coyotoes and they need to stay in the wild not right in plain view. They are not afraid just waiting for an opportune moment.

I would check with a local wildlife rescue, there may be something that you can put around the barn. I would also be very worried about coyotes that did not respect your space. Scary.

Just remember that coyote females will know when their numbers are decreasing and they will start to have larger litters and allow other females to breed.

Some counties will pay you money for every coyote that you kill.

Yep that's what I did. We had one 2 years ago that I swear my pyr would go play with (you know like the Fox and the Hound). This thing would roam the street and Chimo would escape the corral and head after him 2 farms away but his den was behind my farm. He actually chased us once while riding cuz he knew one of my dogs was weak. That was it, called a hunter friend and had him taken care of. Took him to his area, found him in 5 minutes and had him shot . Felt HORRIBLE and I cried but I have kids and won't sacrifice them cuz I'm an animal lover and don't believe in hunting.

BB Gun will do if you dont want to kill them... Couple pumps then let'er rip. After you sting them a couple times all you will have to do is walk out there and they will be gone.

That is scary though. I have to say I would probably shoot them with something more than a bb - if it were me and they were safely out of the way of the horses.... I don't like wild critters...

Either shoot them or have someone else shoot or live trap them.. they can carry disease, rabies, and will eat your cats in a heartbeat...

We had a serious issue here two years ago.. we shot two and the rest left on their own.. They were so brazen, they would sit and howl within feet of the back bedroom window..

I am an animal lover, and i even rehomed a coyote pup I found in my ditch, but they should run from you... even the little ones, and if they don't... Something is wrong and it's not safe.

They need removed. Period. Before you, your horse or your cats are attack.

Just think if they have rabies and one nips your dog or cat but doesn't kill it??? (starts playing old yeller)...

Good luck, I know it's not a nice idea, but very necessary in this case

A coyote will "take down" anything it thinks it can...that includes you, if they have no fear of you. Your horses are in stalls, they can't get away.

You need to shoot them or live trap them and remove them.

The fact they are IN your stalls and not moving when you come around is extremely frightening to me.

I, too, am an animal lover, but I have lost many a critter to the coyotes and I won't hesitate to make myself as scary as possible to them.

I would shoot them. As Range said they will take down anything. I would start carrying something out to the barn with you.

Ditto! They should run from you and be afraid. It's not good when they have no fear of humans.

I'm an animal lover too but I lost all love for coyotes a couple years ago when I had a horse get killed. According to the DNR agent that came out, the coyotes chased him down and killed him. Be careful! They are small, but sneaky.

We don't have anything to shoot them with, I think I'll give Fish and Wildlife a call today and see what's they can do.

This morning there were 6 of them out in my barn area, eating the hoof trimmings from a few days ago. After the lat few days shovel incident, they scooted off under the fence an watched me. They are all really, really skinny.

Luckilly, the 2 horses boarded here are kickers and don't mess around, and Rocket is aggressive with dogs. But we also have older horses, and Smiley is small, he's about 13.2 hands.

I'm going to call a wildlife removal specialist (they are in the yellowpages in San Diego!) and see how much it would cost to get them out of here. They humanely euthanize coyotes.

1)couple of great pyrenees would keep them away.
2)pellet gun .

You can bury about a foot of fence on the outside of your goatfence.( lay new fence on ground and cover with dirt, attach it with ground spikes, -- make sure to cover it good, then curve fence up and attach to your previous fence.) Then when they try to dig under, they can only dig at the buried fence ...not be able to go under. Then run a hot wire at certain heights on your fence. Horseguard makes a electric tape that has the ground wire built into it. It is sooooo easy to install. No need for ground rods or anything.

Its not foolproof, but new fence combined with the pyrs or with the pellet gun will get your message across.

Good luck

I suspect a Wal-Mart rifle and a box of ammo would be cheaper, and then you have them for the next time they find your place.

Hum no doubt they are seeking an easy meal aka the horse droppings. But, I am sure they would take one of your cats if they get the chance. Some noise makers light fire works with out the lights, if your not looking to shot them may work. Rubber pelets fired at them will sting and leave a nice ouchy. But, soudns to me like they are to humanized. This type of animal can be dangerous even to you! Call you local animal control to get rid of them.

You have a good point. But I live with my mother and my sister, not one of us have ever had a gun, let alone shoot it. Maybe I'll call the neighbor Doug or call Dad and see if he wants to fix the barn and shoot coyotes :-P

What would I do with the coyotes once they are dead? That is one thing I don't think that they accept at the local Waste Management Transfer Station.

Go to a predator hunter forum. They have predator forums like we have horse forums! I think that's funny! Anyway, look for someone in your area. Ask them to come shoot them. I'm sure they will! My h/b is an avid coyote hunter and would welcome the opportunity to kill them. Sorry, we live in MI.
My husband uses www.predatormasters.com
Good luck!

First off, a few of you aren't going to like my view on this. Please, spare me the lectures, this is my opinion.

Where I live, we have a terrible terrible coyote problem. I have family friends who have a similar problem to you, only they have LOST HORSES to the coyotes, and have dens in their pastures, they are so terrible to get rid of.

Place an ad, get them KILLED. Here, pelts for yotes go for $20 and up, at the fur trader (whom lives down the road from me). Most coyote hunters will kill them just for the pelt money, atleast around here.

But, things are only going to get worse with them. You don't want to have to lose any animal, because they were fluffy, and didn't want to shoot them.

Atleast, though, make sure its coyote season, we can only kill ours during season.

Also, my family friend spiked watermelon, with antifreeze.. the yotes ate it and died. (I PERSONALLY WOULDN'T DO THIS.) But, this was shortly after she lost her best horse to a yote attack, and she had enough. They also have llamas to ward them off, and they do an alright job up toward the house.

I doubt a wild life person is really going to do much.

If they are skinny, I imagine they are sick anyways.

You will need a permanent solution, because when/if you kill off this particular group another group will come in to take its place. That is why the buried chicken fencing worked for me.
