I saved a hummingbird!

Found him on the front doorstep this morning, too exhausted to move. I thought he was dead, but I picked him up and he started crying. I held him up so he could drink out of the feeder, and he started moving, beating his wings, then he opened his eyes and flew away after about 10 minutes!

Check out the pics!

Awwwwww, what a cutie!! Last year we had at least 12-16 feeding, this year i'm lucky to see 2. I don't know why, but something is up ! I usually have all the neighborhood hummers.

We called Fish and Wildlife and they said that it's not too uncommon--if they can't fine food for whatever reason they just "run out of energy" and literally can't move. Kind of like a diabetic, I guess.

Hummingbirds use sooooooooo much energy that they would die overnight without eating.....so their bodies go into a state of torpor.....sorta like a mini coma......in order to conserve energy til morn. Their feet go into a locked position so as not to fall off the branch. They are really amazing birds.
So cool that you found that one in time!

I just love those little guys. I put up a feeder last year and had 2 pair. This year I have only noticed one pair. I am glad you found him. He looks like he got wet. Poor little guy.

An interesting thing about them. If they get wet they will just sink to the ground. If you ever need to catch one in the house, just use a spray bottle of water.

I so miss the hummingbirds we used to have in abundance. One summer I had one who used to come land on the edge of my coffee cup and demand the feeder be filled if it was too low. He also thought he owned the entire feeder, of course. Loads of personality in those little fellows.

My g-mas house was on the river so they had one entire wall of glas windows in which birds flew into ALL the time. I only saw one hummingbird do it and we saved him too! It like stunned him for a few minutes and when he realized people had him he flew away!

That is AWESOME that you thought to get pics of it!! Those are REALLY COOL! He is so beautiful!!!
