New family member

Meet Delilah! We went to the Edmonton Reptile show with the idea of checking out baby corn snakes. However, Guy fell in love with an adult female and so...we now have a big purty snake.

Wow, she is nice. I've never seen a snake that red. I do not know anything much about snakes, but I thought corn snakes were the yellow and white python looking ones. In any case, she is very pritty. How old and how long is she?

very pretty I have always wanted to own a snake but everyone in my family is scared of snakes...could get one when I get my own place but they all say they will never come over(which could possibly be a good way to keep the ones away that I don't want around to much and for long periods of time lol)

Thanks guys! She is about 3 feet long and about 4 yrs old. They live from 12 to 20 yrs, and she will grow a bit more but not much. These days they have bred many colors into corn snakes, but she is just a little exaggerated from what the normal ones from Florida look like.

edited to add--breburtch, that was the main reason Guy thought me getting one was a good idea, if his family doesn't like the idea--Great!

lol I just don't understand the fear people have of snakes..geesh my dad when I was little almost had a heart attack when I brought a little baby guarder(sp) snake into the house it was like the size of a pen lol...like I could understand maybe being scared of a 20 foot snake that could sqeeze the life out of you but a couple inch snake or even a 3-4 foot long one like come on lol

I have thought about getting a snake but I don't know if I could feed one like mice or anything. Someone once told me that there are some species that you don't feed them those. What does a corn snake eat, and how easy are they to tend to?

Oh also needed to say, gorgeous snake and congrats on the new family member.

She is beautiful! We had a Leucistic Rat Snake, all white, blue eyes. She loved to curl up inside your clothes.

Corn snakes eat mice. I bought 50 frozen adult mice when I bought her--cost .80 cents a mouse and she eats about one a week. You thaw them in hot water and ensure they are thawed right through and warm before feeding. I do not believe in feeding live prey--hard on the prey and can be hard on the snake when the prey fights back. Plus, the convenience of frozen means no trips to pet stores looking for mice and no breeding them yourself. People think it fun to watch the snake "hunt"--but once you feed live, it is very hard to get the snake to eat F/T [frozen/thawed] again.

Ok, this little venture has now cost in total including snake about $500. Here is her home. Is a lot of fun though!

Wow, Paso... she's pretty! I love the sort of soft shading to her sides, she's really attractive.

I love cornsnakes as pets - a docile, friendly snake, with a lot of personality. I find them to be far more interactive than the ball pythons, myself. Nothing against Balls, there, but I like a snake with a little more activity to it...

Nice, nice setup too. If you're going purchase and own an exotic of any sort, do it right! I really love those reptile cages.

Oooh, absolutely right there with you on frozen prey! So much easier and better for both the prey and the snake. I used to do frozen on mine all the time; great fun when mom came out to visit and I had dead mice in the freezer next to my orange juice cans. Ahh, good times.

What do you think about including a full-spectrum bulb? I had one on mine, and I have them on at the store, but I've heard so many arguments for and against on cornsnakes, including from some of the big breeders... you know how it goes, everyone's got their own opinion. *grins*

Thanks! coming from you I really appreciate the compliments!

I bought her from a long time breeder who bought her last year because she is an unusual mix--her belly is red, and as you said, she has some interesting shading going on. He is too busy to breed too many, and offered her for sale at the show--we got there just after opening, and when Guy asked to handle her, I knew we had a new pet, lol.
Bought her out from under a few other interested parties, apparently. The breeder has been in reptiles for like 25 years, and he said if I ever breed her, please show him what she produces, he would really like to know. She is proven, has had one good clutch.

I have been wondering about the full spectrum. At the moment, I have an infrared in the lamp [yeah hardware store for that--love the adjustable height] to both help see her move around in the evening and to help the UTH pad keep her warm spot warm if it is cool in here. I only turn it on for one of those two reasons. I have heard both sides, and will likely get a bulb and check out how she reacts.

Wow what a beauty you have there. I love snakes and she is a fine example. I love her name too. I have had corn snakes, water snakes, black snakes, pythons and Boas. My favorite was a Colombian Red Tail we had when we were little. He grew to 13 feet and was the family pet until he died from Pneumonia. After that we always had a snake in the house. Congrats she is awesome.

Cool snake. I had one before- a 3ft Ball python... and I will never have one again because he was a pain to feed- one winter, he wouldn't eat for 6 months- including live, thawed, and freshly killed mice/rats. Good luck with your snake- nice cage, too.

Amy--that is why I decided to get a corn--especially a grown corn will almost always eat no matter what, but Balls are known for being picky eaters sometimes.
Orchid--I wanted to buy five or six snakes at that show--so many colors so little room and money, lol.

99horses--Isn't she a cool mix? She is like a normal with a few other morphs shadowed in.

So I took a pic of her to work at the office I work part time in--not a soul likes snakes--out of 6 people there only two would look at the pic even,
I have definitely become even weirder to them--cool with me. They are easy to work with, just limited, if you will.

She is neat! Her colouring is really pretty.. my aunt used to have a yellow corn snake, called Clyde. He wasn't my favourite pet, but to each their own!

Am not sure whose pet she is, She spent an hr on Guy watching tv tonight like they were old buds! Here she is in handcuff position--stayed that way for about ten minutes until Guy decided he wanted to go get some pie,
