My new pet

This is Shylock, he's an African Sulcata Tortoise. He's about 5" long now, but they are the 3rd largest species of toroise and someday he will be 24" or more long. I don't actually know that it is a "he" but that's what we call him. So... someday when we live out west where it's nice and warm and have a horse barn... we'll have to make a little stall for the toroise, too!

He's little, but already very destructive and mischievous. The one picture is of him lying on top of his little "cave" that I made for him out of cardboard... after he knocked it down. I let him out for exercise (he paces if left in his cage all day) but if you lose sight of him for ten seconds, ha can be gone... it took me 20 mins to find him the other day! And he eats like a garbage disposal...

Anyone else have a tortoise?

Pics:

-After knocking his cave over... he looks satisfied with himself, doesn't he?

There is a guy here where I live that have numerous tortoises (HUGE !) and he sells their eggs for $10k a piece. They are pretty finicky I guess b/c he had sold his house around the time they just layed or were about to lay thier eggs and he had to turn the deal down b/c he couldn't disrupt their surroundings.

When he did finally move, he rented a UHaul and it took 6 guys to carry them up the ramp and into the truck. I offered my 2H Featherlight straight load but only ONE would have fit, so the UHaul was more practical.

I hope you have your tortoise in your will, as it will out live you ..... and hope you have a back yard for when it outgrows the inside pens. The pens the guy has here in town are pretty amazing.
