turkeys

I am hatching my first right now, also. I have been told that they need a lot of humidity because the eggs are so thick. I guess a 75% hatching rate is pretty good. When you candle them, you should see dark places (that will grow with time) in eggs. It will start out as a small (dime size) spot and grow until it fills the egg. Good luck!! Mine should be hatching later this week.

Chaz that is a very good web site. I'll have to put that on my fav.

I've never hatched turkey eggs but I do raise peacock. They are large hard to candle eggs too. I shine a bright flashlight in the large end of the egg (with the air sack). Take a piece of cereal box or other stiff cardboard and cut out a 1/4 inch hole in it and tape it to the flashlight. (homemade candler )
In a darkened room or a dimly lit corner view the egg. Make sure you have washed your hands and they are free of oils. With a marker put a dot on the end of the eggs you have viewed. Two dots if you question if it is fertile or developing.

When the chicks hatch they are fed a turkey grower. I recommend a medicated feed. If you can't get that then you can get antibiotics that is water soluble and you can add it to their drinking water. Place a shiny object in the feed like a quarter. This helps to teach them to eat. (I've raised turkeys) They are not overly bright birds so keep a close eye on them the first few days.

Be sure to let us know when they hatch.

Interesting read.
My skinny Hubby doesn't eat much-wonder if taping a quarter in his plate would get him eating better?
I want to see a pic of the newborn turkeys in here when they hatch please. Never seen teeny turkeys.
