Cinna was handled for the first time today!

Well, I've been spending a good bit of time each day with either my hand in the cage or just chilling next to Cinna. He's been responding well to talking and seems to be trying to mimic. He's young yet so I don't expect him to be "talking" after a week.

His brother Cy (my brother went buy him) is a lot more of a chatterbox but nowhere near as tame as Cinna is already.

Today I took him out. He freaked a bit in the towel and got away a few times but after a little while he was sitting on my boyfriend letting him pet him. Eventually he let me hold him and pet him and he's well on his way to understanding the "step up" command!

I'm so excited. He's sitting in his cage chirping right now but he stayed out of his cage for close to an hour. He did fly and smack into things because when my bf got him from the petstore his wings were already clipped, but they didn't clip them right because he can still fly fairly well. His landings are clumsy. Once the wings grow out, I'll clip them better so he has more control over his flight but can't fly high enough to get into mischief.

He's looking like he will be a cuddlebug. He likes to rest against your cheek if he's sitting on your shoulder. He did that to both the bf and me.

I am waiting for the bf to send me the picture he took of me with Cinna, but you can see that he's already calming down.

After tomorrow I'm going to move him into his large cage!

Is Cinna a cockatiel? I can't see the photo too well but he looks like one. I'm glad that he is feeling at home already. I am still thinking of getting either a cockatiel or a senegal parrot. I want a bird that can be cuddly and can be my buddy. Our local pet store only has finches, so i am trying to find a breeder that is nearby. How old is Cinna? I've talked to a lady who is in Ohio (I'm from NC), and she has a Senegal parrot whom she says is very sweet, doesn't bite, and knows how to step up. I have thought about buying this one and having her shipped, but she is 7 months old. Does anyone think that a bird who is a bit older will have more problems adjusting to a new home?
Thanks for everyone's help! Good luck with your new birdie!

Janet,

Yes, Cinna is a cockatiel. I would suggest that if you're looking into a Senegal, do tons of homework, find owners and breeders and talk to them. They're a little more advanced a bird than a cockatiel (not that cockatiels are easy).

7 months old is still rather young and Cinna is between 4-6 months old. He's already turning into a cuddler. He likes to hide under my hair.

Cinna is adjusting better than his brother Cy. Cy is quite a biter. Neither were hand fed but I have enough experience with these birds that I can handle an untamed bird. My brother isn't quite as knowledgeable.

Spirithawk,
Thanks for your reply. I don't think I'm going to get the senegal from ohio, because just yesterday I found an aviary that breeds them that is only 1 hour away. I'm going up this weekend to look at the different birds that they have so I can get a better feel for what I want. I have done quite a bit of research on the Senegal (as well as talked to several breeders and owners), so I do realize that they are more "needy" than a parrotlet. I've kind of decided against the parrotlet, after I've talked with several owners (and one used-to-be breeder) who says that alot of them can be mean and bite constantly. I know that all of them aren't like that (in fact, I realize that all parrots bite sometimes), even you said that you loved them. But it has been enough to be a turn-off for me. I'll let you know what I think after I visit the aviary!

Any parrot or parrot-like species can be nippy. I personally didn't like conures because every time I handled one, I got bit. Then I later met two who were so sweet that I nearly spent the $300-400 to buy one.

Piper was nippy in her cage. She was fine once she was out of it but nippy in the cage. I was working on that and she was making progress when the snake got her.

Part of it is the bird's personality. As a species, parrotlets aren't any nippier than any other bird species. It depends on the individual bird and the type and amount of handling it has had.

I just got bit by Cinna tonight because I moved him to his new cage yesterday and he was pissed at me and a little stressed from the move. I covered him up with a shirt while I held him and he calmed down and was being sweet again afterward...so it depends on the bird and the situation.

Good luck in your choice though.

My male cockatiel would draw blood if he got a chance. He never did finger tame yet loved to have company - people, dog, cat, etc. Never learned to talk either but was a real whistler. Running water in the bathtub seemed to get him started. He'd whistle the tunes from All My Children, loved to watch hockey and would whistle whatever tunes were played on the organ during the games. Rather than whistle he'd spread his wings and turn upside down on his perch whenever Good Night Irene was played on the accordian. And only with that tune. He'd often run around the floor and would attack the cat or dog if it moved too quickly for him to keep up. The cat removed more than a few feathers but he didn't learn.
