Question Donkeys?

We were thinking about getting a donkey or three to chase off coyotes, but we don't know a lot about donkeys. Could I get some general donkey info?

Thanks

There is an actual Long Ears Chat section of the forum, maybe there would be some useful info for you there http://forum.horsetopia.com/long-ear-chat-56/

I only have one donkey, so all I can tell you is about him really... They aren't stubborn, they are just very cautious, and have a strong sense of self preservation, and will do almost anything once you fully have their trust. I like having him around, he's pretty cute and entertaining. My donkey (and the neighbors 7 donkeys ) don't make a whole lot of noise, my guy will let out on good hee-haw when I got out to feed in the winter, or when something is out of the ordinary, he let me know when my mare was foaling a couple years ago .

They're stronger than a horse of the same size, but tend less feed, and I've heard drink more water comparatively, but I have auto waterers, so not totally sure if that is fact . They have very upright feet, which need to be trimmed differently than a horse; can be described almost as if they're standing on teacups. I take good care of my animals feet, but my donkey's feet grow slower than the horses, so he gets trimmed every second time the farrier is out. They can have lungworms apparently, but I think most dewormers cover those anyhow. You might want to double check the label when you are buying dewormer.

My donkey doesn't like strange dogs or coyotes, but is fine with our dog. He will chase off strange dogs, and has patrolled the edge of the property when they were coyotes near.

Hope that helps
