Ferrets...?

I will be getting a ferret next week! I have taken care of them before and absolutly love them!
I am getting a 2yr old white male.

Only thing i'm not certain on is what they eat?...other then the pellets and food bought at the pet store, what else can they eat as snacks and such?

Fruits like grapes, raisins, cantaloupe... are great with a good balanced Ferret food.

Welcome(back) to the world of Ferrets!

What did they eat when you took care of them before? We were told to feed fruit and vegetables as a treat. We were also told there are foods to avoid but my daughter has that list and I am not sure where she put it. I do know chocolate was on there.

Ferrets are OBLIGATE carnivores. Absolutely NO fruits and veggies..they can have raw or cooked chicken...I recommend http://www.maferrets.org to get your questions answered by experts in the field. A high quality kitten food in which MEAT is within the first three ingredients or food formulated especially for ferrets is HIGHLY recommended. We do ferret rescue and have tons of experience with these adorable creatures. During the summer they MUST be kept in air conditioning with temps kept below 80 degrees or they will get too hot and die. They like to swim and snorkel in a rice box. They will steal and hide ANYTHING!!! LOL we have had ferrets with different fetishes. One of our current residents LOVES plastic 2 liter bottles and will bite the crap out of you if you take his bottle away. Good Luck with your new ferret....

Wow, Sparkyharky, you threw a new term at me, so I had to go look it up ... I had no idea there were so many classifications of carnivores! Obligate, facultative, hypercarnivore ...

And I love your description of them having fetishes, that's EXACTLY perfect! The one I had was obsessed with shoes. He would run off with them like a dog with a bone. And unfortunately we had a waterbed which had two sides right up against the walls of a corner ... so when we moved 2 years later, we found a whole "nest" of missing shoes back there!

I fed mine Iams kitten food, and he did great on that. That was about 15 years ago, but at the time it was a little higher in fat content than some of the other kitten or ferret foods out there, and it kept his coat nice and shiny.

LOL Lady....We had a female, very tiny, that could get UNDER the hall door. She went into my roomies bedroom and stole and hid her ID holder. It took us 6 months to find it. She, sadly, died two months after hiding the ID holder. We have three now but have had as many as eight in residence at one time. We have had most of our ferrets given to us because people didn't realize they are so much work or didn't have time to let them out to play. They MUST have two hours out of the cage daily and they MUST be closely supervised because they can get into PLENTY of trouble without any help from us humans...LOL Also, the little buggars spend about 16 to 20 hours a day ASLEEP.
