What I've been up to...

I haven't been posting much these days, but there's a reason!

I got guinea pigs!

Not the most exciting pet, I thought, but I can't have dogs here and my boyfriend has a nasty allergy to cats, so we settled for his favorite childhood pet. He's built a cage for them that spans a large chunk of my living room

These things are an absolute riot. Every night around 7pm they go crazy and gallop around their cage. Often they'll do it in a single file lineup

My only complaint is that they have figured out that their dinner comes from the fridge, and now whenever you even go near it they start squealing. They're like the ultimate miniature horse in a way

Without further ado here are the little fiends:

Seth Rogen the red-eyed rex

Jay Sherman the sheltie mix

and Cosmo Kramer the abyssinian

They all have weird names, it's what I do. Jay so far has cost us about $430, his own price and vet bills included apparently you don't get a discount if the thing only weighs half a pound

Cute little fuzzies

Is Seth going to use your homework for a snack?

"Sorry Teacher, my assignment wasn't handed in because my guinea pig ate it."

What do you bed the cage with? My daughters have two pretty big boys, and they are so hard to keep clean. I haven't come up with a good system yet. Thanks!

They are currently bedded with the least dusty pine shavings I could find (called Stallion Bedding - comes in a 5 cubic foot cube and expands to 12). Some don't recommend pine because some pigs can be sensitive to it, but mine have been doing just fine. However it turns out I myself am very allergic to it (knew I was allergic to pine trees in the house because of my reaction to christmas trees but was hoping it was in the needles heck, IKEA furniture doesn't bother me at all! ) so now I have to switch to aspen and hope it helps. Thankfully the owner of our local feed store (where I got the pine) can probably order in a big cube of aspen for me. Definitely try out different kinds of horse bedding - the bedding sold at the petstores is of equal or lower quality and the prices are absolute highway robbery we're talking about 10 times the price from what I've seen, it's appalling.

Awesome site, that's where we got our ideas for the cage we have now. Turned out my mom had a bunch of those storage cubes as well, so up went another level to the cage

We added a new floor to the cage today with a cat bed (with a heating pad underneath, spoiled piggies ) I just had to share, I think we're going a little nuts

The cat bed I picked up for them today. Wish my bed was that soft!

The "guinea pig mansion" my boyfriend made for them at work - nice to see he's being productive

and finally a picture of Cosmo munching some hay...I meant to get new pictures of all the pigs as they've grown considerably (Cosmo's growing a butt tuft! ) but my camera battery died and I then found that my spare battery is dead as well. My charger is at my mom's New pics soon!!

::edit:: stupid photobucket...I noticed the photos were too big and resized them and reposted the links, but they are still huge on here, hopefully it's just my computer. Sorry it that's not the case
