Baby Parakeet Pics - updated page 3! 10/26/09

My neice has a mated pair of tiels- they had 3 babys- two born 5 days ago and one born just yesterday-= MAMA is pecking the older two? First clutch for her.. should we remove the older two and hand feed? I've hand fed birds before so I have the know-how there. but.. I've never reared two itty bittys like that before? Do I need a heat lamp and how hot?

why is she pecking the OLDER TWO? Not the newest?

HELP.. I have to go over and see them in a few hours and deciede what to do then..

THANKS!

See update at the end of this page.....

Mine did fine with the babies...so no ideas of what to do, but many prayers....

My one thought is are both parents with them...maybe put one parent (daddy) with the older ones...and keep the new one with mom.

There was some posters on here who gave me good websites for bird help.....but like always would have to search for them....

Maybe there is a vet or a bird help website with better ideas....I would think the warmth would be the main issue....

Please keep us updated....

I am guessing sinces its her first clutch and they did NOT hatch at the same time.. she thought she was supposed to "push" the first set out already.. and focus on the newest one? I DONT know.. The hand rearing should be fine.. its just the warmth factor... I worry about them becoming cold..

I've raised countless "wild" birds that were brought to me, but I never raised domesticated ones and the wild ones were very hardy.. and I just used a blanket and a smaller room that had a heater in it to keep it warm?

I hope they make it.. Plus they are my neices and her boyfriends and they just love them to peices .. so well see how this goes! Thanks for the prayers PJL...

Update

SO there are 4 baby keets- nicknamed

TEENY- cuz it is so small
small
med
& large

The large one has a gash onthe top of his head from mom/dad pecking at him and his beak on one side looks like its been gashed too.. He wont hold still so its hard to tell..

I have them in a nesting box w/paper towels over a low heatpad that is covered iwth a towel wrapped a couple of times over it..?

I also have a blanket forming a ring around them and a blanket draped over the top? Does that sound okay.. I have all of this sitting in a dog carrier? In my bathroom w/ the heat on....

Anything else I can do besides trying to convince them to eat every 2 hours like it says?

Here are the pics

They made it through the night.. so I must have done something right! Yay!

So.. every 2 hours for feeding.. since they are so small.. I still worry about the itty bitty one..Teeny.. his siblings are so much bigger then he is..

Oh my gosh! So cute! I know absolutely nothing about birds, so I can't help you there, but I do know that those little chirpies are very cute!

They're all going to be different sizes because she lays the eggs days apart, which also makes for different hatching days usually too.
Looks like you're doing a great job, hope the little one makes it!

Everyone loves to hand feed cockatiels so I hope they do good by you, it makes the calmer. Maybe too many are hand fed so parents do not know what to really do anymore. They look well, at least the one in your hand. A lot of work for you but will be worth it as the youngsters will love you! Good luck.
