Pony peeps...can you help me?

Hello,
I just got my shetland, a pony size, breakaway grazing muzzle. The breakaway part is a plastic clip. Im concerned that if my little guy were to get caught and flip onto his back, his weight would not be able to break the plastic clip. I think it was designed with full size horses in mind.

Have any of you had ponies that were actually able to break away safely? Im not even sure he is even strong enough to pull back and break it...let alone lose his footing and break it with his weight. I thought about using twine but not sure about that either LOL... he is such a little twerp (just love him!!!)
Thanks for any opinions
L

Well, I haven't tried a grazing muzzle with my Little Guy, but I just wanted to chime in to say don't let a pony's size fool you! They pack a lot of strength into their small size--that's why a lot of stuff (blankets, etc.) that is made for foals won't stand up to pony use! Hopefully someone that has personal experience will come in here, but my guess would be that if he needs to get out of that muzzle, he will!

My vet said he has seen some accidents w/ horses and grazing muzzles, so be aware there have been some problems.

Muzzle safety

I haven't had any problems with my little mare and her muzzle.

It's not a Best Friends but a cheaper version. It is the deluxe version with a velcro safety poll strap. I also had the metal troath snap.

She's busted 2 in two years. One was shredded. The velcro was still intact as was the buckle. The one just had a strap broke on the side of the muzzle.

I do think she got her hoof in it while scratching.

I do not like the double velcro on it and may take half of it off so it will break quicker. She can and does rub herself on the trees which releases the one velcro side. Then her mane catches in it.

I've also seen breakaways with leather crown pieces.

Another thing with muzzles is the different wear on their teeth. The dentist commented last year that she must be a muzzle wearer.
