Buying a Mini

OK i have known this little colt ever since he was born. (August 27 2006 i believe. i dont remember) he is a sweet heart and while the parents were out of town i was taking care of them and teaching him to lead. then they came back and have now gone back to tennessee with that little bit of training he leads like a champ. Now I dont know if they would sell him or not but how much does it cost annually to have a mini and how much land do they need. I love him to death and want to keep him to take to some local shows and do halter with. then let my trainers son who is autistic show him. I will post some of his baby pictures in a little i have to upload them first

Edited toad:

Never mind you wont get pictures. I dont have them anymore. they have gone somewhere i cant find them

Minis are great! I have 4. They are kept with my paint mare and 2 goats on approx 3 1/2 acres. They require the same vaccines, farrier work and wormer(just less) as a large horse would. They just don't need to eat quite as much as a large horse. Mine right now are on pasture 24/7 and are being supplemented with just hay as we haven't had much rain here lately. During winter if needed, I add a little sweet feed for dinner, but that's it. You have to watch that they don't get overweight though.

We have one...and a donkey that is just as small. Well Bill (the mini) gets a handful of feed and is fat as can be. He is out 24/7 on grass and they do have a round bale out there. Same wormer..except less, farrier work is the same (however ours gets down every other time..so 10-12 wks), vet work is the same. They are fun and have such a personality. Ours used to play football with his previous owner. He would jump up in the air and catch the ball (a small flattened football)

thats making me want him even more. we have a small pen that we used to keep our goats in that he would stay in because he is VERY small. until i introduced him with the big guys and let him run a little. can you feed minis T/A? i was just curious if it was too rich for them. and does it cost less to get them gelded? i have no need for a mini stallion.

You would have to check with your vet to see if they will reduce the price to geld. mine did. As for size of lot to keep him in., as long as they have room to run and play they need to excercise and build up muscle tone.
When worming do not use "Quest" and worm for the poundage of the horse.
Do not over feed treats such as high sugar, and a fat little horse is not a healthy onel
I think you will do fine and the idea of having your friends son show the mini is a great idea.

I KNOW for a fact that he has never been wormed. but i would put him into a small pen until i could trust our horses with him enough to run a little and play every day. The pen is big enough for my two horses to graze happily in but you know not enough for then to actually live in. He would be taken out daily and worked with. Hes such a sweety if you sit on the ground he puts hos nose in your face and sniffs and then blows into your face and looks at you with puppy dog eyes. But right now the owners are out of town and their other neighbor is taking care of them and he hasnt had the money to pay him so i dont think that they are getting fed. He used to be fat and happy but now hes slim and happy. His mom is very skinny and daddy looks pretty good too. I dont know what to do about that. maybe i should offer to feed his animals and in return take wilbur

I love my mini and wish I could have more. My minis purpose in life is to be a companion to my gelding. Very easy keeper. He eats a 10% pellet, minerals, daily wormer and OA and Coastal hay.

I love my mini to death! Mine just gets a hand full of 17% pellet food and grazes 24/7. Of course, I'm putting him on a diet because he's getting kinda chubbby. I think you should go for it!

I love my minis to death. I have 3 right now and they are like potato chips...cant have just one.LOL mine stay out on grass. They are in a field next to my grandmas. I am not giving them any feed right now. My grandma gives them her scraps everyday and they are just little butterballs. If they were laying down on their side you could bounce them like a basketball or roll 'em down a hill and their they'd go.... Hope you can get a mini...they have such great temperments. Very sweet and loving creatures.
