How many have a mini with full size horses?

I submitted a picture of Bella my QH filly and Barnbum's mini to a photo of the day site. I couldnt believe I got an email from a lady telling me off on how you shouldnt pasture Mini's and full size horses together and she could "kill" him, yada yada. Sheesh, I dont know how many people have Mini's for a companion, but is it as dangerous as this lady made it out to be? I can understand if you have an aggressive nasty horse and you toss a docile Mini with it, but most who have a Mini and a horse together have enough common sense to not do that

I have never had a problem with minis in with the big horses. We even keep some donkeys in with them and they are all respectful.

Umm put us down as having mixed herd of BIGS and liddles.

This is NOT the first time I have heard this from some Mini breeders.
Obviously care must be taken when exposing them initially and if you have a very aggressive horse OF COURSE.
It is case by case and it just rankles me when someone gives me a hard time about mixing them.

We have a few that mix wonderfully - some we would never attempt. It is all about the horse and situation.

Lots of mini people will say it's dangerous and it is more so with a mini mixed with big horses than one with just minis. A kick in play can do major damage, even death, from a big horse to a mini and it has happened. That being said though, I've pastured my gelding with big horse for the majority of his life and he is 8. At the time I had only him and was not going to pasture him alone so my option was to pasture him with the big guys. He's gotten hurt more from other minis than he ever has a big horse.
You will get people who freak out though but it wouldn't stop me from sharing the pictures.

It was a picture of Barnbums mini and Bella. She is rearing up and it looks like she is a monster. It was just a moment in time type of pic and sometimes they can look bad. Its just the principal of it. I had just got Bella and the big horses were picking on her (which is more dangerous than her and a mini together) and she felt like nobody would play with her. So Barnbum brought her guys over and Bella and Koda played fine. HE was actually chasing HER. I got a good pic of that one. I will post it if Barnbum wants me to.

Has anyone heard of putting a goat with a horse as a companion??? I separated my 2 yr old filly from my aunts Yearling stud colts. So she's by her self. Which She is doing wonderfuly but I still feel like she needs a friend. I can't afford another horse let alone feed it, I could feed a mini but can;t afford to buy it, What about a pygmy goat???

We've had several minis over the years. They've almost always been in with the big guys. Truth be told we've had more problems with the minis beating up the big horses than the other way around.

I've seen people use full size goats plenty of times for a companion for older horses. I don't know about pygmy goats. You could start a topic for that and see what experiences others have had.

It all depends on the individual horse,I had a mini and horse colt in the same area together and they did fine till the weather started to warm up and the colts hormones started to flow.He wanted to rough house with another and I caught him picking the mini up off the ground completely and shaking him by the back of the neck. Also with my other geldings the haflinger is great with him and I'd never worry but my draft cross ran him over,I thought for sure some thing would be broken but he was fine. Needless to say he is out with my collie dog now and they are the best of buddies.

Heard of it both ways. I tried it once...and my mare flipped my mini mare. That was the end of that.

Can be scary, though, one well-placed kick and that miniature....

Depends on the horse in question. My mini stallion was a broot. My full size mare ended up sitting on him to get the point across.

I kept my horses together but only when I was around. But then all my horses get put up when I'm gone. Living near town and next to the school ya can't trust kids.

One kick from a big horse to a big horse can kill too. So horses should be kept alone in private paddocks?
YES I agree it is a case by case basis but it is also BS to ASSUME that it will always-not work.
I actually had a woman tell me she would not sell to me because I did not have enough sense to not put a mini in with a big horse.
Oh my yes-THAT went over well with me.
