Can they get along?

I have a 9yo shetland gelding who is very playfull and a 15yo mini gelding who was a stallion uptill 14yo and would love to put the two together but am worried they will fight. When there is a fence between them they will play and be fine for a time then start kicking and squeeling backed up to the fence something fierce. I have wondered if the shetland wasnt gelded properly and has some hormones going still but feel sorry for him by himself as a pasture pet. The shetland had a mini mule mare as a friend for a year and he constantly picked on her to play and she was very happy to just stand there then he got aggressive and we found her a new home so..... Any suggestions or stories would be appreciated.

If they are walking the fence and trying to get to know each other, the only thing you are going to have to do is put them together in a large area and see what happens. sometimes only time together will be the deciding factor for them to be friends.
You will have some kicking and screaming and running around but after a while they should get along., Good luck

how big of a size difference is there?? You could try putting them together but I would stand right by them ready to go in if they fight. Could be that they are both alpha males and then even being gelded doesnt matter.
