Worming minis?

I bought my mini in October at 5 months old and he had been out to pasture with his dam since birth. I am sure he had never been wormed as he never had a halter or lead on him. Hadnt been handled at all.
First thing I did when I brought him home was a hoof trim and worming.
I have had the hardest time cleaning him from worms. I worm with Ivermectrin every 8 weeks. In December my horses were wormed with Zimectrin Gold to cover the tape worm. I worm him at 250# body weight. I know he doesnt weigh that much but Doc says it wont hurt him.
I wormed him again this last week and still I see worms. Not near as many but still there. My Paso mare is wormed at the same schedule and she is clean.
I dont get why I cant clean him up. Should I be doing something different?
Used to be you could just look at his poop and see worms
Now after a worming I have to look thru the poop to see any so an improvement. The worms are white and about an inch in length and taper down to a pin point of a tail. Ugly things!
Any ideas for me? He is healthy otherwise.
Thanks!

Rotate different wormer. Make sure the active ingredient is different each time. Just stay away from quest. It has an active ingredient that starts with a M. I can't think of it for the life of me right now. I am sure someone will know. Otherwise I will post it when my brain wakes up

I had thought about rotating. Doc says that the ivermectrin is the best as it covers alot more worms and horses dont become resistant to it
Do you rotate for your minis?
Guess I worry about the next wormer not killing some of the worms and they take ahold again like before.

Worms hatch out every 7 to 10 days. So, if he had a heavy wormload, you're only able to kill the adults that are in there on your current schedule.

I see you have two different options.

You can worm with Ivermectin today, then again in 7 days to catch the hatch.

Or, you can worm with a Panacur Powerpak. Jeffers carries them. It's an entire cycle of wormer given like once a week for a month that will get ALL the beasties. It's a bit expensive and it's for a big horse. I wonder if any of the mini sites would carry a mini pak? Hmmmm...must do research on that. But, you can still adjust it for the mini weight.

I worm mine at 250lbs, too, and the stud is less than that, and I've never had a problem. You should be fine there. I wouldn't increase the amount you give, just the time in between.

As short kid said, don't worm with Quest or anything with the "M" wormer. Moxi something...sheesh, I can't remember, either. I just stay away from any wormers with the chemical starting with "M." It's just too strong for the minis.

When you worm that frequently, like the 7 day cycle or the Power Pak, be sure you give Probios after...

Yes I rotate my minis. I now have four of them. Only had one that seemed to be constantly wormy. I watched her and she would sift through her own poop.
I will go out to the barn later and get my schedule. I rotate every 8 weeks as that is when they get trimmed. It just makes it easier to remember

The chemical in Quest is Moxidectin.

Thanks to you both.
Maybe I am missing the eggs then and the ivermectrin isnt killing the eggs.
Now I wormed a week ago with the ivermectrin and its ok to worm today and then in another week?
Yeeks!
What do you use for a probiotic? I have never used one

Yes, it's fine to do that, Stormy. I use Probios. You can get it in a paste or pellets.

Yes. Go ahead and Iver today and then again in a week.

Then, yes, rotate your wormers. Iver does take care of all but tapes, so it's best to use that one right now for your "massive kill" attempt.

I rotate, too, every 6 weeks, between Iver and another chemical.

I use Probios as my probiotic. Comes in a handy tube!

Hey, what did your vet say?

Oh, and there was an article just two weeks ago stating that worms are, in fact, building an immunity to Ivermectin. However, there is no research currently into another chemical wormer.

With ivermectin its always best to dose up as opposed to under dose. I think a lot of people underestimate what their mini weighs. If you dose a little high it wont hurt but if you under dose it wont work.

Would a tape you use for measuring weight on a normal sized horse be accurate for a mini?

I used it. Never thought it might not be accurate. But I worm according to the tape.....

I had one vet tell me the weight tapes are notoriously not accurate and one said they were LOL. I know we took a horse to the university once and they asked me to guess her weight. I guessed 200 lbs. I was way off. She was actually 285. And this was a very fine boned mare 32" mare. So dosing her at 200 was not working. Now this is just ME but I now de worm them 50-100 lbs over what I think they weigh. But only with ivermectin. Other dewormers you have to be more accurate.

Go with a daily wormer, Strongid C (pellets) so much healtier for them. Contact your vet to get started. ALOT of benefits to daily wormer than "shocking" their system every few months with paste. JMO. My mini is on a daily wormer since I got him 3 yrs ago and what an over all improvement with him. Great coat, feet, no medical issues.

yikes

I would definitely powerdose with panacur/safeguard and a few weeks later double dose him with pyrantel (aka strongid) then get him on a daily wormer, then you will be able to use ivermec when you want. I rotate dewormers personally but if you are going to use ivermec you have to powerdose the little guy with some panacur/safeguard for sure. The directions are on the box and you can ask you vet. Good luck...I hate worms!!
