Itchy and Scratchy, allergy question.

The Promise Ranch has 2 miniature horses and 2 full sized horses, and 1 large pony.

Our minis are itchy. Whatever is causing it does not affect the larger horses. They are itchy, and scratch themselves on thier faces, neck, mane, shoulder and tails. They are groomed as much (or more) than the other horses.

What could be causing this? How do I treat it? Are miniatures more prone to allergies? Sweet itch?

Mine are itchy too. If they are shedding mine itch constantly...I body clip that helps when it gets warm. I also did a big round of Ivermec and treated like for lice, that helped...a bath to get the dust out...I don't know, I still have an itchy one, she may just be wired that way. The vet said allergies, but didn't know how to help!

Ah HA! It could be lice! I didn't even think of that.... Minnie is by the goats and could have picked them up. Try using a fly spray that is listed for lice and see what happens. Though, one of our members has dusted her horses with Sevin dust and it's worked. Since Minnie seems to think Sevin is a horsie treat...I'm not sure I would do that with her!

Other than that, you know I'm at as big a loss as you are.

Is Sparkplug turned out in the same area as Minnie ever? Could be a plant that they are sensitive to.

Hmmmm.... I will use the goat/sheep spray on them, as the lice are listed as one of the buggies it repels... More baths, too...

I hate to see them so miserable!

Ok, I have a question on the Sevin dust... Is that the stuff in the Garden area? I was also asked if I wanted 10% or 15%? What does that mean?

I could dust Minnie. I'd just leave it on for a bit, maybe brush it in... Then, wash it off... Silly Minnie, eating Sevin!

Gosh, I have no idea. I picked up a bag in the garden department and that's what I used on the goat... I had no idea there were different versions!

Did you ask in the garden department? "Yes, I'm not sure what percent because I'm looking to dust for lice on my horses and my goats. Which one do you recommend?"

I had to get some Pepto Bismol for my goat at the gas station the other day. The woman told me she hoped I felt better soon. I felt the need to tell her it wasn't for me, but for my goat!

I just got Sevin, didn't know there was a difference. My little filly had rubbed to skin, not raw, but smooth...she runs with three others who were all fine, but I treated for lice just the same. I am sure it is allergies. Baths seems to help, I'm not sure what to keep her away from. If she is allergic to dirt... Maybe she should live in the house with me. Anyway, good luck with Minnie!

I use the 10% inside the house to help with fleas and other buggies that like to come into the house during the hot months. I also use it on my dog, doing just how you posted Promise.

With our mini we had did the dusting thing wiith NO results she was still itching. We then used flea spray with NO results, still itching. We bathed her 3 1/2 weeks ago and EEEWWWW live ugly lice. It was so bad her mane area was crusted over with the live ones under the crust.

We shampooed her with diluted (1/2 and 1/2) Dog/puppy shampoo and the lice and eggs were popping up from everywhere, REAL GROSS. Then treated her once a week for 4 weeks with Ivremectin (Vets advuce for the pesky, not want to die little bugs) Then body shaved her. She no longer itches and lice are gone

Hmmmmm.... After reading sugarsgal's post I think that Pixie (our fat little bay mare) still has lice. Right after we got Ginger and Pixie we dusted the heck out of them (you could SEE lice eggs everywhere) but we used an all natural dust (for cats) that was safe for pregnant mares. Ginger seems fine, although she still has dandruff, but Pixie won't shed out and has rubbed bald patches all over her. I guess I'll dust Pixie again, I don't know if it's safe to dust Ginger with Piper nursing.

I can't bathe them yet. It's snowed here off and on for the last two days! Nothing like waking up to snow in May.
