ok guys, I need some help. added pics

I took in a rescue tonight. A mini mare and her baby. The little foal was born in June of this year...very cute.
The mare in age Unknown, Im guessing 10-13 trs.
I have some concerns and I need your help.... The little foal looks as though she has loose stool. Its on her tail. Looks fairly loose.
The mare has major issues with her hooves. They look like elf feet, on all four.
Apparently she has been like this for years. She is supposed to be trimmed every 8 weeks, but they grow this way (thats what they told me)
Is this true, they will never be normal again? Have you heard of this?
I had to work late tonight so I will get pics and post them tomorrow.

Thank you

It will help when you have pictures for sure

The foal could be full of worms and probably needs dewormed. Use panacur or safeguard first then in 4 weeks use Ivermectin. She could also be loose from the stress of moving.

If the hooves are curling she is either going to long without trimming, foundered in the past, has a bad farrier or all of the above. Depending on how bad they are you may have to trim slowly every couple weeks to get her back balanced

Thanks for taking her in!

As Kay has, said but could also be from poor food intake by the mother, if it does continue have a vet check the foal could be an infection and fever, I would take her temperature and make sure not a virus, also about the feet, trim a little each time no need to have elves feet and yes a photo would help
on the foals rump put vasaline to keep the manure from irritating the skin, even desitin.
and good for you for taking them in.

Thanks for all of your replies.
I will get some pictures today and post them. The mare was on sweet feed, about a handful a day...(is what I was told). I was thinking I should get mare & foal feed right?
The foal looks as though she had diarreah for a while, but sure seems frisky enough. And FAT!
So, I need to put mare & foal feed on the shopping list and wormer. Anything else?
I have never owned a baby before, this will be interesting..

They are cute, baby just needs to have tail and hinney washed and mares feet do not look bad, looks like she was rocking on them for lack of movement in a holding pen.
And please feed grain, a lower protien I like a 12% and a decent quality mixed hay, but you will get all kinds of answers so go with your gut, I have been feeding minis for 18 years, and I have not had a founder problem or diabetic problem. and just do not give alot of apples and carrots. Worming and a salt lick and love is all you need,

I have never owned mini's...but have learned alot from HT
I dont think her feet look to bad either. Looks like she could used trimmed though and her back feet looks like they just need cleaned out Like I said...I dont know a whole lot about mini's...but her feed def dont look like elf feet. I have SEEN elf feet on mini's...at the sale They only sold for $5. Sad huh?

Your girls are cute! Thank you for bringing them in. And I agree with the filly's bum...she needs a GOOD washing. I would also deworm them.

Don't forget a salt block. I prefer the mineral block myself.

Your mares hooves look like they could be filed to shape them otherwise they don't look that bad. I've seen worse.

As for the foal I'd trim some of the tail hair starting with the matted and pooped. I've seen breeders shave the butt, so unattractive but it grows back. I wouldn't do a full body wash just the nasty end if it were me.

Silver dapple they are pretty! congratulations!

In addition to washing the foal's rear and an appropriate salve (even vaseline will sooth), I would give the foal a probiotic. I had an orphan with diarrhea and the probiotic was very helpful. I agree - the mare's feet don't look too awful, but do need attention. When a pony founders badly, the feet look like they are wearing wooden dutch shoes! Unless the mare is underweight, I would stop the grain also, and feed a good quality hay.
They are a cute pair though!

The mare does look likes she has foundered previously. I do think there are some visible founder rings on the front hooves but hard to tell in a picture. She looks like shes trying to NOT put weight on her back legs. I agree with picking them out as she could also have thrush going on. They look pretty packed.

Thank you for all the helpful information. I wormed both of this morning. And put a call into my farrier that i needed him out asap.
The probiotics, where do I get that at? I saw the foal take a bm last night, and it looked more like a cow pie. So I dont know how bad that is??
Well thank you

I wanted to show you a picture of one I took in about 2 months ago.
She looked horrible, she was so skinny that it made her look bugeyed!....I almost didnt bring her home....But, I did. I got her home, after some wormer & groceries she is looking much better. I will get some pictures of her later for you.

Probiotics: may be available at feed store, naturally exist in yoghurt, also in health food store, ask for Acedophalus (break open the gel caps into grain or small treat).

Update

I would just like to thank everyone for thier advice! Cookie and Peanut are doing great!!
I had the farrier out and he said that mama had either foundered at some point or had trouble foaling at some point. How ever she has not been trimmed properly for quite some time. But now her hooves look so much better. Still no perfect, but better.
The baby's loose stool.....well 2 doses of worming fixed that right up! Stool is normal.I washed her tail and bottom and a few trims here and there and she has the pretties little tail now.
I had the vet out as well and got mama vaccinated. She is a little underweight so I got Mare & Foal Feed, by Nutrena Life Designs? I hope this is good feed I bought it at Tractor Supply.
Anyhow, I just wanted to give you a update. I have never had a foal before. I let them out in the day, and stall them at night. They seem to have settled in pretty well around here. I'm up to 7 now. And I love them all!
