Questions

I have just a few questions..

1. Do you keep all your minis stalled all the time??
2. Is it okay to let them out on pasture grass??I know they can get fat..
3. Stategy or Safe Choice feed?
4. What the oldest you could breed a mini mare?Ive seen it as late as 18 and as early as 2....I dont like breeding horses under 3-4 years of age.

I think thats all I can think of..
thanks

We only stall horses getting ready to show, mares getting ready to foal, sick horses or stallions.

Grass is good for any horse but miniatures do have to have their time limited. We do grass 8 hrs and then drylot

I am not a fan of strategy or safe choice.

OUr mares are not bred until they are at least 3 and may times 4 or 5. I have friends that have 22 yr old mares breeding. I guess as long as they are healthy

Mine are never stalled.

Out on dry lot with free choice hay.

Handful of Safechoice to keep them out of the goats' feed.

My mare was bred at 4.

Heres what we feed

Horses 2 & Under or horses needing weight

Purina Equine Jr

Mature horses that are showing or driving or stallions during breeding season

Purina Horsemens Edge 12 percent pelleted

Mares during their last 60 days of gestation

Equine Jr

All get alfalfa/grass hay

I know people love to add beet pulp but Equine jr already has beet pulp in it so we dont add it unless a horse is going to travel a long distance

I do think a lot of people over supplement. If you feed a good hay and/or grain you shouldnt need a lot of supplements

You also hear a lot say show horses only get a handful of hay. Not around here! While they do get less they always get at least 1-2 lbs of hay per feeding. If you dont feed hay you are really putting your horse at risk of ulcers and I strongly believe they need it for good mental health.

Mature idle horses that are not showing just get good hay and pasture

I really believe in keeping it simple!

Your stud is supposed to have a longish, thick mane. It is a characteristic of miniatures. I would not cut it or thin it! You could braid it out of the way....

I will only trim my miniatures' tails and that's because we don't show. It keeps them out of the mud. I also will sometimes trim forelocks to keep them out of the eyes. But, when I am harnessing, I will braid the forelock to keep it out of the blinders!

I have a local feed mill here that makes its own feed...I was wondering about them.Only thing I dont like..they use alot of corn in there feed!

Ground Corn, Oats, Wheat Bran, Soybean Meal, Dehydrated Alfalfa meal, Rice Bran, Cane Molasses, Dried Corn Fermentation, Vitamin A Acetate, D- activated animal sterole(???), Vitamin E supplement, Thiamine hydrochloride, niacin...and some other stuff..

They also said its a complete feed. Its 12% protein feed.

I think it's a no-go and I should stick with purina.

We do thin and undercut manes on show mares, stallions & geldings. The judges really prefer a nice flat mane. We use mane tamers to flatten them.

Tails should not drag the ground.
