Color question*pic*

Im buying this stud. But I cannot figure out what color he is?From what I have been looking up his color is a "blue taffy"..He can't be a blue roan...Any ideas? The owner said he was born a chestnut but turned this color.Notice the chestnut color in his flanks.

Wow he's beautiful! I would say a chocolate....maybe? With flaxen mane and tail. Or blue with flaxen mane and tail? I wouldn't call him a blue roan as he doesn't roan out at all...I dunno...but he is beautiful! So refined!

I def. notice the diffrence in the necks between him and the pintaloosa...I use to show rabbits and the best thing to do is try and start off with the best you can get.

I ended up not buying the pintaloosa.I backed out.

But i would not call him a roan either, since roans usually have a black mane and some black points...

I thought he may be a chocolate....but I don't think he would have a white mane and tail?

The color looks a little off in that photo, but he looks like he carries the silver gene to me. I did a little research and apparently the silver gene is also called silver dapple, chocolate flax or Taffy gene.

First glance, he screams 'Silver Dapple' to me.
Silver Dapple is known as different terms in different breeds, including "Chocolate Palomino", "Chocolate", "Taffy", "Silver" etc...

Baby fuzz versions of Silver can be very confusing to determine what they will be as adults.

Silver Dapple is not really a 'dappled' color all the time. Most of the time they look a chocolatey brown to gray color with flaxen mane and tail, with or without dapples on the body.

It's a gene that modifies black based horses.
(ie, Black looks like the above pic. Bay would have a red body but that chocolatey color on the legs, and the bright flaxen mane/tail. Buckskin would have a gold body, chocolatey legs, and the flaxen mane/tail.)

I believe hes a silver bay which is very common in minis. This is his clipped coat but I but with full coat hes silver bay. You can see the reddish sheen on parts of his body. Handsome mini!

Looks Silver dapple to me. I don't think silver bay though, there are 2 silver bays on the farm and all the silver modifies on them for the most part is the black points and the mane and tail. Turns the mane and tail light and the points dark chocolate brown.

The correct term would be silver black. (silver diluting a black horse or some call it silver dapple horse) But I feel strongly he is not black based as he has obvious red in his coat. But silver does not show up on red so he almost has to be silver bay. It would help if you had pictures in his normal unclipped coat. You can see his lower legs are that muddied up color which is typical of the silver gene modifying black points.

I could easily agree with kaykay - he is shaved for that pic, so the undercoat may be darker, and he could infact be a silver bay (silver dapple + bay) - with the shaving giving him the appearance of being less red in the body.

I will get some more pictures Sunday of him.

The breeder said he was born chestnut! But turned this color as he got older.

His sire was spectacular bey, so he might be a silver bay!

Thats exactly what I thought he would look like in winter coat. Now you can see the bay and the black points on the legs. Definitely a silver bay

Wow, after that last pic I am definitely changing my vote to silver bay! I work with Rockys and see A LOT of variations on the silver gene, but there is no mistaking that one!lol.
