Cuties

Thanks, Horse Lady. I, too, think they are cute. Poor little Matty is so boney & ratty but like I've said before she is incredibly sweet. Since these girls are so little (haven't measured but I would guestimate they are under 30") I don't want to put them with the other 2 minis I have. I want to keep them separate so that I can control their feedings, make sure they get healthy, etc. We are working on building them a new area & shed at which time I plan to separate the mare & her filly so that I can begin working on the filly's trust issues. I've never trained a horse but I want to learn & I look forward to working with these girls.

they look rather wormy. Be carefull worming them as it could cause a blockage.

Definitely full of worms Deworm first with panacur or safeguard as its easier on them. Then in 4 weeks use ivermectin gold

I would get them on Purina Equine JR

I would do a first trim on them to get those toes off then a second trim in 2 weeks to get the rest. Sometimes when they are this long its hard on them to trim all at once.

Bless you for taking them!

Poor little girls! Good luck with them! I brought one home from a sale with bad feet and another that was just skin and bones from a different sale. They are both fat, happy and healthy now!! Just takes a little TLC!
I agree with the poster that can't believe someone could starve a mini, I mean come on! How much do the little things eat???

Girls

Thanks so every one for all the great advice. How will I know if they have a blockage due to the worming?? What do I look for? They've had round one of the worming.

I am so in love with these sweet little minis!! (So are my granddaughters Bayley 5 & Addy 2). The new minis follow us around & Matty lets the girls love all over her. She is so gentle & sweet. The other two are still skiddish but at least they come running to me when I call - they just don't want me to try to touch them however the mare will take treats out of my hand now.

I have to get feed today so will look for the Purina.

If they are impacted you will notice that they are off, like a colic, just do not over do, everything one step at a time, like Kay has stated. they will come around fast, .

Exactly, Def keep a close eye on them and if you suspect anything make sure you call the vet ASAP. Its nothing to mess around with. I lost my baby last winter to this nasty thing. Its sad.
They are beautiful! Im sure they are very greatful that you took them in. They look comfortable at your place. Thank you for your kind heart They just look so cuddly and sweet.(((HUGS TO THEM)))

All I can say is bless your heart for taking them in. It just breaks my heart to see them mistreated. I don't understand how people can be so cruel. I am glad you have them now. They look like they just need some TLC and I am sure they will get that with you. Please keep us updated on how they are doing.

update

Just a little update. Still can't touch the mare & her baby but little Matty is something else. She let me put a halter on her this weekend. I brushed her all over & worked on her tail. Put a bow in her mane because I knew the little granddaughter's would like that. She just stood patiently. I lifted all 4 feet & she was very patient. I was so proud of her (& myself). Once I had her all spiffed up I turned her loose & she pranced all around with her tail held high. My husband said she was announcing to all "Look at me! I'm so pretty!" When my granddaughters arrived the 5 year old went to work. As she told me she had on “work clothes & her pink cowboy boots so that she could help train the horses". She caught Matty & then led her all up & down the drive. Matty just did whatever Bayley wanted her to do.

Makes me wonder if someone had worked with this sweet little girl OR maybe she's just naturally gentle & craves the love we give her.

Aww! What an adorable pic! Sounds like Matty was imprinted at birth but then again maybe she is just naturally sweet. Sounds like Bayley is going to be a little horse woman when she grows up.

Here's a trick that I try when I can't catch misty my wary mare. Use Matty to help you catch the other horses. Put her between you and the horse that you want. If you have a halter on the horse you can grab that and treat or you can grab the mane and treat. Use a treat that they really like. In no time they will get the idea that they get rewarded for being captured. Having Matty between you makes you less of a threat. The feed store sells an apple flavored treat that looks kind of like a dog biscuit. Not as messy as a real apple.

I haven't been able to get close enough to even try to get a halter on her. Like I said she's really skittish. The little mare is still scared acting too although they all run to me at feeding time. The mare will take treats but not the little filly.
