Scotty August 2008

I haven't put up any recent pictures of Stingin Scotch Twist (Scotty) yet.
My QH gelding is three years old now and filling out quite well.
He's about 14.2 hh and green broke. He's going to make one awesome trail horse!

He's really nice looking; gotta love a dark horse with no markings, you can put any color you like on them !

Can I ask about his left front leg...?

I also had a Scotty growing up (well, he lived at my grandparents), and he was the same color. No one knew what breed he was, and I'd have to double check through some old pictures, but I don't recall him having any markings either... Seeing your Scotty sure brings back good memories of the old guy *sigh*

AlbertaGirl,

Sure you can ask about his left front leg It looks offset, doesn't it? He's no halter horse, and I was concerned about that leg. He's sound on it so far, but we really haven't put any strain on it. He's not going to be barrel racing, jumping, reining or cutting, so there will be minimal torque on it. I'll have to see as I ride him more if it stays sound. Basically I want him for trail riding, and doing some medieval games with the SCA.

Or did you have some other question about the leg?

Nope, that was it! I figured he must be sound on it, but I wasn't sure if it was from an injury or just his conformation, etc.

What are SCA games

That is a pretty severe case of the knee being benched. Usually not a problem but can lead to splints and any sort of fast work should not be done on horses that exhibit this conformation fault to any degree of severeness.

AlbertaGirl: it's just the way he was born. You can only see it from the front, not from the side. SCA is the Society of Creative Anachronism, a medieval group. We have equestrian games that I'd like to train him for. . However, with what Spyder mentioned, I might have to scrap that idea.

Spyder: Say what? Isn't that seen from the side where the knee looks backward? He's strait from the side. You mean he isn't going to make a good riding horse? Well dammit, I just can't win.

What a good looking boy! I too would be concerned with his knee. You may want to consult with your vet to see if he can actually handle being ridden. Personally with something like that, I wouldnt get on. But I am a heavy girl so I think about that type of stuff a lot.

Spyder is correct in that this type of defect is called a Bench Knee.

ThorAb,
Yeah I just looked it up. Bench knee and it's severe. I'm heavy too, so now this concerns me. I don't know why I never saw that before. I was always looking at it from the side and never considered it from the front, or considered it as "severe".

Well thanks for pointing it out AlbertaGirl. And thanks for putting a name to it, Spyder. Before I totally ruined him, it's best to find out. It's just hard, having raised him and sending him for training and finally finding a horse I feel good and safe on, to find this out when I should have seen it right away.

This is so disappointing.

Id have the vet take a look at it to see if he might be ok for some light riding like trails or something. But for now I wouldnt get on him myself until I knew whether or not it would be ok. Ive never personally dealt with a horse that had it. I did have a little buckskin filly that messed up her knee at 2 months old, she is now 4 years old. I gave her to a friend, she was actually broke to ride and is used for a children's mount. Her knee looks kinda like that but also has a slight curve. Apparently their vet didnt see a problem with little kids being on her... If only I could find the pictures I had of her when she was little to show her legs.... drat.

Well, you're welcome, but sorry to have been the bearer of possibly bad news .

I agree about maybe having the vet check him out as well, but did the trainer have naything to say about it ? You're right, it IS very disappointing, but I've got my fingers crossed that you will find out he'll at leat be okay for light use... Good luck!

AlbertaGirl, Hey it's better to find out, right? All the trainer said was he had no buck in him, that he was going to make a great family horse with a few more miles on him, and that he was a nice horse. That he was going to be one of those horses you could put anyone up on. I never met the trainer, I got this assessment second hand from my neighbour who trailered Scotty and her horse to the trainer for a month.

Thanks for the nice compliments on his colour, looks and eyes. My hubby picked him out because of his colour
