Horsetopia Horse #19

Nomeanjean and I would like to introduce Stormy owned by TDH, here is what she had to say about Stormy.

Breed: Purebred Arabian
Registered name: Tsunami Tsurprise (he was an oops breeding)
Age: will be 4 in April
Height: just shy of 15H, expect him to finish about 15.1
Temperament: 3

There's a story about Stormy that I want to share. I discovered he had a rather rare condition after I got him. When he was 19 months old, I had the vet out to geld him. I'd warned the vet when he got here that I had been able to feel one testicle at times....some times none at all. He couldn't locate any either, so we decided to knock him out and see if, when he was completely relaxed, he could find them.

Nope - nothing there. Asked if I was sure he hadn't been gelded, although there was no scar tissue....but then some people geld at a few days old, in which case scar tissue would be next to nil anyway. Coming from his situation though, there was no way they would have spent money on him by gelding him, so.... that meant I had a cryptorchid on my hands.

Now.... crytorchidism isn't that terribly rare, but the fact that it turned out he was a dual crypt, was (or at least the condition it turned out being). He had surgery to remove them, and as it turns out, I saved his life by doing so. The one testicle was normal, maybe a bit on the smallish side. But the other - could have killed him, one way or the other. It had morphed into a fluid-filled mass of tissue that, had I not done surgery when I did, would have either eventually started leaching into surrounding tissue and turned cancerous.... or have burst and he'd have gone septic.

Funny thing is - the vet kept the mass that had once been a testes, on fameldahyde, and he's still known as the Mega-nut colt. It was the best $600 I ever spent!

1. How long have you had Stormy and where did you get him?
I have had him since he was a yearling. An acquaintance of mine was liquidating her horses, and in return for helping her place 3 of them, she gave me Stormy. He's a freebie!

2. What has been your best moment together?
After his surgery as the vet led him out to go home, he nicker-nicker-nickered and whuffled at me all the way to the trailer - so glad to see me, and get on the trailer to head home. Poor baby!

3. What was your biggest roadblock in training Stormy and how did you overcome it?
When I got him, he was hardly halter broke. Not flighty, but did not know the very basics of being a horse around humans. He did not know how to tie - fought it. Not a panic-throw-myself-away-from-this-horse-eating-post kind of fight, but a geez-I'm-bored-and-I-don't-wanna-stand-here-and-be-bored kind of fight.... So, I tied him. For a few hours at a time, and stayed in eyesight; I'd never leave a horse unattended who didn't tie, but I did leave him alone so that he had to think about his situation. He did throw himself to the ground a couple of times... after going over to make sure he was okay, soothing him a bit, I left him again. It only took 2 tying sessions, and he never did it again. Ties and leads like a dream ever since.

4. What has been your greatest achievement as a team?
See #2.

5. What is your favorite thing about Stormy?
His sense of humor - funny thing is, it's also my hubby's least favorite thing about him. Also that he's very playful and fun to hang out with.

6. What is the least favorite thing?
That he still seems to be a teenager! Sheesh - I was hoping to start riding him this spring, he's physically ready now but he needs to get past puberty first! Talking about sassy attitude - doesn't get out of line, but he sure does tiptoe up to it.

7. What is Stormy's favorite treat?
Plain ol' apples.

8. What are your future plans for Stormy?
He will be my all around riding horse - trails, parades, wagon trains, kid-toting ride.... all in good time.

A few photos....

This is two weeks after I got him; end of June, and you can see he still had some winter fuzz on him, thanks to the situation he'd been in.

Last summer, as a 3 year old:

this is about 6 weeks ago, playing in the snow:

Wow, another great horse from another great owner. You obviously saved his life and he was grown and filled out, to be a gorgeous young man!

I wish you both many, many wonderful memories and happy trails!

I love those photos - and I have always loved that horse.. he has such presence.. and is stunning in build.. You would almost think he could talk with the intelligence in his eyes.. sigh..

He fits you - you two are a great team.. and I wish you would post photos of him more often..
