My poor Phantom. Its been a week. New pics.

I have owned Phantom before a couple times. The first time he was just here so my mom's good friend didn't have to feed him. Him and I bonded very quickly. Then came the time when he had to go back because her daughter wanted him. A few years went by and my horses had to both me put down in the same summer. I was devasted. Phantom was then given to me as a gift. He filled some of the void that was left from my mares. He was my love. We had him for a while and at the time it was my mom who was paying for all things horsey related and she said she could not afford to have 4 horses for the winter. So I had to send Phantom back. When he went back he was gorgeous. He had a copper shine to his coat, his eyes were bright, his mane was long, his hair had grown over his scar from where they had his cribber too tight, his feet were trimmed, and he was a huge fatty with some muscle. I went to one of her daughter's open houses this June and while we were over there I asked if I could stop over at her horse pasture and see him. We drove over there and as soon as I seen him I wanted to start crying. He looked atrocious! His feet were horrid, he was skinny. He just looks dull. Like he just wanted to give up. I told her I had to have him back. Her daughter would not get rid of him. So I waited. Eventually she decided she would sell him to me for $200. So. Yesterday. I get a phone call saying that Phantom is in the pasture with Maggie I went out and used the weight tape this morning on the 3 horses and Maggie my 15h mare was 1000, Sonny my 15h smally built stud was 888, and Phantom was a mere 1064.And alas, Phantom. He is a 16.1h TB gelding.

These are his backs hooves. When he left the crack was pretty much gone. The farrier said on the next trim or so it would be completly taken care of.

Poor boy. Thank goodness he is back with someone who loves him. Is that bird-ox (sp?) in his forelock?

Bless you for keeping tabs on him and being persistent. Looks like you got him just in time....he's not too far gone weight-wise (but definitely going downhill and probably fast) ....He should respond well to some groceries and TLC. Good luck. Can't wait to see his "after" pictures.

Thanks so much everybody. I will be sure to keep you guys posted. I was trying to get some pictures before he left but can't seem to get them off the old computer. His forelock and his tail are full of burrs I mean seriously. How dumb. But I am so glad to have him home!

I live in Crystal but he was with a woman who lived in the Oil City/St. Louis area. He was taken to the Isabella County fair a few years back. He was also sold at Yoder's Auction a while ago.

Well here is a (terrible) scan of a picture. You can kind of see what he looked like before he left

I sucessfully got all the burrs from his mane, forelock, and tail with no clipping or trimming. I will take pictures in a week or so and see if there is any change.

WOW! God Bless You! That must have taken a lot of work, time and patience. I'm sure he feels better already!

I actually don't think that he looks too bad, weight wise. I just bought an appy mare who is 15.1, 12 years old, and looks almost like a skeleton with skin on it . The burrs show up in all of my horses' manes and tails also--some type of shrub in the pasture has them and this time of year I am constantly picking burrs out of their manes and tails! The only thing that I find really sad is his hooves. But they can be fixed! I owned a TB mare with severe cracks in her hooves, but with good farrier care and me applying hoof oil/ointment, her hooves looked good in about 6 months. I think that you have this licked! I'm glad that you were able to get him back. He's a beauty.
