Meet Amos, the Pony Who Cheated Death

A group of us neighbors all ride together. One very kind elderly gentleman had to put his wife in a nursing home for Alzheimer's. Instead of getting used to it, and doing better with it, he seems to be getting more and more depressed. When invited to do things, he declines saying, "There's only half of me here." They have been married 57 years. This nice man has owned Amos for 15 years, since the pony was 18 months old. They used him for friends and guests, he taught the children to ride, and then the grandchildren. But he got a wire injury, and it wasn't healing. My troubled neighbor decided Amos was never going to get sound, and with the expenses of the nursing home, he decided it would be kindest to have Amos put down.
My other neighbor, Lenny, went out to look at Amos very carefully, and we both agreed it was a fairly simple injury that would, most likely, heal with time and another vet visit or two. A week or two later, the distraught man couldn't look at limping Amos anymore and called the vet to schedule euthanasia. Then he remembered promising his friend Lenny before he had the pony euthanized, to give him a call. Lenny was there within the hour with his trailer to save the pony.
Within two hours, Lenny had the vet out to check him over and do some x-rays. The vet agreed, with time the pony would heal. Nothing severe. Perhaps it was the vet visit, or Lenny's special horse magic, but within a week, Amos was sound. He has great gaits, is the perfect size for a small man, affectionate, friendly, fast, and kind. After saving his life, Lenny felt a real bond for the sweet and willing pony, and has decided to keep him. Originally he had planned to get him well and give him away. I get to ride him whenever I want. He really is a wonderful fellow. I am so happy Lenny saved him when he was only hours away from euthanasia. As Lenny says, "It would be such a shame to put that horse in a hole." And here is Amos, 14 hand Pasoloosa:

What a great happy ending for the pasoloosa and for all involved in saving him. I am sure his original owners is resting well knowing that his horse is in a loving home/

Great story! Nice horse. There is a Tigre Horse registry, and most of the horses in it are Pasoloosas. I'dnever heard them called that before! But I've seen a whole "ranch" full of them in New Mexico.

Thanks, The Old Bear. I am going to look up Tigre horses. Actually the former owner is upset with himself that he gave up so quickly. After all, he raised, broke and trained the horse from an 18 month old. He's just so upset with everything right now. We'd do anything to cheer him up. He asked Lenny not to bring Amos to our weekly rides just yet. Can't bear seeing him and knowing he was going to "put him in the ground" which would have been such a mistake. He is such a kind old gentleman, he's not thinking clearly right now. He thinks if he'd done more things with his wife and less riding, she wouldn't have gotten Alzheimer's. And he thinks since she is not happy, he has no right to be either. Sometimes when we are riding together and it's a beautiful day, he says, "I shouldn't be out here riding when she's in there so bad off." At least he has 3 great kids who spend lots of time with him and are doing their best, and lots of nice neighbors who look out for him.

Amos looks like a really sweet fellow, it would have been such a waste to put him down, kudos to Lenny! I hope your neighbour soon feels better about things.
