Well, whatever he is, he needs a home so I'm going to give him one until I get him going under saddle well again. Whether that's going to my trainer or me doing it, he's got to fine tune his skills so he can make someone a nice mount again. I'm thinking he is probably going to make someone a nice trail mount. I'm just glad I'll get to take care of him in between.

Training a donkey or mule is totally different than a horse.
Meredith Baxter is excellant on training mules and donkeys.

No offence, just didnt think you knew.

I was going to say the same thing Tippy said about hinnies and mules. In fact my uncle has a riding mule right now that has a head that looks as if it were transplanted from a horse.

Also, as to training a mule/hinny, there is a large difference as snickers pointed out, when you ask them to do some thing don't expect them to respond as fast as a horse. They have to decide if they want to do what you've asked, if the do they'll do it. If they don't want to do it, you might as well ask them to do some thing else and come back to that later.

ETA: by the way the picture isn't working anymore, well at least I couldn't see it.

Friends have the offspring of a curly appaloosa stallion and donkey. He looks not at all like the above animal. He resembles a donkey only much taller and brays.

Definate a Mule.

It was a long process as an older Mule with bagage, nearly a year later he is showing and being competitive and a great riding animal for anywhere I want to go. Is hard to approach unless he trusts you, but once in the saddle anybody can ride this animal, but if I had not been patient and learned his quirks, Some might have sent him to auction and would have been a waste of a great mule.
Here he is nowdays

GOOD LUCK with your Mule Project.
They are like a horse in alot of senses but alot of "horse training games" you try playing with a mule, do not work the same way. Getting the trust & a Bond has been the hardest thing I have dealt with, with my older mule, then the sky is the limit. My younger Mule had a clean slate to start with and is easier to teach, However they get tired of repetitive training and get annoyed. Once and twice and they say I got it, take a brake. But they are to me like dogs that they know who their owners are, very loyal, where my horses have been more like, who has treats and will ask the least of me are the favorites for the moment.
I am still new to longears myself, but is has been a very interesting learning curve for me to get into their heads. I just hope they think as much of me as I think of them.
Then the Donks are awhole other story...whew, that takes even more patience!

Well THank You, I love them. The one on the left (red Roan) is actually a mammoth Donkey that is 1" taller than my bay mule Barney.
I have 3 donkeys 1 mini, 1 lg Standard, 1 mammoth and two saddle Mules, Barney is 16 and Hombe is 17 months.

Im liking this Forum very much and happy to see others that positive about longears!

I picked up Prince yesterday. They also gave me their 5 yo registered Buckskin mare, Winona. Here they are at my place:

Yes, they are overwhelmed. They want Winona to end up at a 4-H home. At her level of training, she's not ready for that. She'll go to my trainer until ready for a new home. Prince was an exceptional trail mule three years ago but hasn't been ridden much since. They want him to get going again and be sold to an avid trail rider. I will do my best to place both. I'm sure gonna have fun getting Prince going again! I can't wait! Of the two, he's more personable.

Winona may possibly be bred! they had her in with their 2 yo jet black Morgan stallion. He's drop dead gorgeous! Very, very irresponsible on their part! If she's bred, we'll find out later. I will relay that information to my trainer so Winona is handled accordingly. If pregnant, she won't be re-homed until after she foals.
