Info on Donkeys! UPDATE! PICS!!!!

A lady I know has a rescue that I volunteer at as much as possible. She just recently inherited some donkeys. A male and female, very cute little things. the female is a paint coloring brown and white and the male is just regular donkey coloring. She got them to help with the wild animals that sometime wander through the property, ie. coyotes, other dogs, ect.
Anyways..... I was wondering if anyone knew of some good sites or books to get info on donkeys. How they behave? How to tell what kind of mood there in? How to train them for pulling buggies and what not. There is alot of stuff on horse's and even mules but not much on donkeys. They are both friendly but since none of the volunteers including the owner has ever had a donkey we just want to know how to proceed. Unlike a horse the donkey have different ways of letting you know things and we really don't know what those are.
Any help would be great. Thanks

On RFDTV there's a show called Training Mules & Donkeys, I've heard it's really good. 1 thing to beware of is they can kick out in ANY direction, even when holding a foot up! They can (and most of the time are) great pets. Good luck with them! We need pictures!!!

Donkeys moods are easy to tell---they express it just like a horse. Ears pinned look out!

Is the jack gelded? It is best to have a gelding running with the jenny... intact males can be aggresive and of course has a high side effect of little ones. I personally think they make better herd protecters as geldings.. they are less concerned about breeding and more of protecting thier girlfriends.

Donkeys are so fun... check out http://www.lovelongears.com/... good info!

When I first got my donkeys I used www.lovelongears.com to learn what I could. They have a some good info there. Just google "donkey information" and there are alot of sites to choose from.

The place I board my horse has a donkey -- Daisy is her name. She's great with the horses. She is "owned" by 1 of the horses who looks after her and is always by his side -- kind of funny to watch because it is O.K. for the horse to leave and the donkey is good with the others, but if the donkey leaves, this horse will go looking for her and call for her . She is great with running the odd stray dog out of the pasture and she is a great babysitter. She is treated just like a horse but is not ridden. She is haltered, led, farriered and gets her shots & wormings (smaller doses) like the rest of the herd.
Good luck with the donkeys -- the white & brown one sounds kinda cool. I didn't realize donkeys came in "paint".

The donkey is gelded. Since we are a rescue we really don't want to be bringing in any new "little ones" into the world at this time, although it would be cute. They are both really friendly. It's really hard to tell there moods cause when your petting there face they pin there ears back but yet want to be petted more?

If they kind of drop thier ears down, they are relaxed. If they lay them back.. they are probably just listening behind them or moving the ears for itchies.. if they actually pin (flat against the head) they are angry or hurt. Hope that helps.

So the donkey's are doing great. They both love attention and come straight for you when you go into there pasture. They are always calling you when you leave or when your coming over, so you know that they want attention. They are both a little finiky (sp) past there neck and especially there legs, which doesn't help considering the male has REALLY bad feet, he came that way and you can't pick them up without him trying to get away. Not sure how to fix that one without getting kicked.
Anyways... here's some pics. The male is the standard donkey color I guess you'd call it and the female is the other one. They are soooooo cute. I love them and glad that the rescue leader got them.
