Donkey Advice Needed

Alright. This is sorta a mini vent as well but advice is needed too.

Anywho. My neighbour has a mini donkey jack. This donkey breaks out of his pasture and comes to my place all the time. He herds my horses and is mean to my boy and I'm afraid he'll breed my mare. Anywho last night I was woken up at 1:30AM from the donkey being in my pasture again. So I go out to get the owner and he's not home. Apparantly he's only home on weekends!!
So I go out to cathc the donkey and he's got a length of chain trailing behind him. So I catch him and am forced to tie him to a tree otside my house. Didn't go to bed till 3am and kept waking up to check on the donkey and make sure he was ok.

Now this is where I need advice. The doney is a sweet boy. He'd be even sweeter if he didnt still have his "manhood" Well Today I found someone to come get him and take him home and the guy said the owner ties the donkey up like a dog and leaves him there. I was also told that the donkey has killed sheep since being tied up and has a sour attitude since being tied(no doubt I would too) I took at look at the donkey and he needs his feet trimmed he needs to be dewormed and he's got sores on his nose from a too tight halter. The guy says they're looking to get rid of the donkey but I can't take a intact male donkey. I don't have the facility for one. I told the guy if someone castrates him I would take the donkey and give him a home. But I don't think they'd really want to do it that way but I can't just leave him there!! I feel so bad for the little guy. Animnal control wont do anything I've called already.

So I guess I need to know what to do. Any advice on that situation? Also if all you experts could give me an idea of what it would be like to care for a mini donkey. My fence is just electric fence that he goes under to get in with my guys. Once castrated and if he moves in with me should I be concerned about the fence or would he just not leave my horses.

Last night was not the first time he's come over to see my horses. I've counted approx. 5 times so far. I doubt this will be the last too.

WHAT DO I DO!! Advice on all concerned in this topic would be great guys!!!

Thanks!!

You could take him in and have him gelded. to keep him in perhaps add another electric wire lower so he will get zapped and not attempt to out.
Apparently he likes your place better than his.
I have a mini donkey and he is always going from paddock to paddock, in and out but never leaves the farm. They are smart and stubborn at the same time.
Once they make up their minds todo somthing they do it.
The habit is already formed that he is going to come back to your place.
And how could someone TIE up an animal on a chain and leave for days not knowing if the poor little guy is dead or alive?

Well thats what I thought. What is the point of having the donkey if you keep it chained up like a dog. How does the guy know if the donkey has and food or water while he's away?!?!?!

As much as the little donkey is a P*ss off, I feel so bad for the little bugger. I hope the owner castrates him and allows me to take him home. Even if I can't keep him I could at least find him a home where he can be a normal donkey!

Now are they hard to take care of?

I UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read some of my posts and you will soon find I care for 13 of the little guys that aren't mine.

We have our 5 acres field broke down into little paddocks to control the problem.

My advice would be to run some electric, pay to have him gelded. Leave him up in the smaller pen for one month. (That was my vets advice... just to ensure there can be no accidents.) You could even then try to rehome him. I'm sure he will be a nice boy once he gets out of that horrible situation.

It is so sad how some people treat the poor little things, just b/c thier little and supposedly "hardy".... they need the same amount of time and care as a horse.

Bless you for doing your best!

That is so mean! Grrr some people... Our mini donk (gelded) is so sweet, but he's also like litterly 40 years old. He respects some of the electric fence, but not all of it. Actually, I call him my "wild burro" because he just roams the property & stays in the yard. I hope you can get him, or find someone else who will take him!

I've never had a problem with my 24 yr olf mini jen. (My vet has though!) She eats very little, is sweet as molasses, loves to cuddle, gives kisses. She leads well. PURE JOY! Then I have this non-gentled jen who, I'm is sweet but very scared and mistrusting. My neighbor had an intact jack who was so sweet it made me get a donkey! IMO, not hard to take care of!

You could take him to the vet to be gelded before he comes home. Poor guy, and bless you for trying to help out. I hope you can figure something out.

well the donkey came back on sunday, and my horses are getting use to him comming and going. The "keeper" of the donkey came to pick him up. Apparantly he has left msges for the owner with no success BUT I was told there is a woman just down the road that has a mini donkey and she wants this little guy. So I figure as long as either her or I get the donkey he'll be good. The "keeper" said that by then end of the week the donkey should be gone. I hope the woman gets him as I really dont have the money or room for him, BUT if needed I could make something work so he could be happy. So everyone cross your fingers pauko finds a great home with this lady...poor little guy

Oh I hope he finds a good home!

I hate it when people treat animals like toys!

did you get him?i have a mini horse that is an escape artist.i bought him from my friend and he would scoot on his belly to get under her fence.to cure him i run a wire from top electric to another line that i put bout 2 feet from ground.he stays away from fence now.how terrible of the neighbor to tie him like this.i bet he does get a nasty temper from being treated like this.
