Dixie Foaled - Baby Mule #2 - With Chrome!

Another healthy mare mule! She's out of a gaited black and white sabino and a dapple gray Jack. Guys, what color is she? Looks like grulla markings around her face?!? I'll check for dorsal stripes in a couple of days (didn't want to crowd the mare, she knows Dad much better than me). She's a darling!

Wow! She's adorable! I don't think I've ever seen a paint mule, but I don't see many mules!

Thank you! We really thought Dixie would have another black mule with high white stockings, so this little surprise has us all smiling.

Wow, she's really sweet and flashy looking! Congratulations on the safe arrival of such a beautiful baby!

I don't know too much about how colors work when crossing a horse and a donkey, but in the pictures, the dam looks like she's a dark bay Tobiano . Either way, I'd guess that the filly was a bay tobiano. Can they grey out though .

If that is mom in the photo, she is not black. She has an agouti modifier - so would technically be bay or brown. As of now, baby looks like it will shed out to look like mom. Its a little too early to tell, but baby has a 50% chance to eventually grey out and it looks like it might do that with those light rings around the eyes.

Gorgeous baby!

Hey, I was just looking at your Easter baby mule, and this one's ears look a little longer than Treasure's foal... is there any mule foal are size standard? I know, weird question

Yes, it's Mom. Here's a better pic of her. Am I wrong on the sabino part also? I'm going to be dangerous if I can get this color stuff nailed down.

Good question! I think it's the gaited vs. quarter horse mama's that has affected the ears.

Dangerous, hey?! You're too funny !

The mare's pattern would be tobiano, and her color looks to be bay, so she's a bay tobiano ! Here's a website with all kinds of colors descriptions http://www.equinecolor.com/color.html

The thing I'm not sure of, and maybe your Dad knows? Do mules tend to grey out? With horses, there's supposed to be a 50% chance of the offspring of a grey parent greying out themselves, but with a mule ? Hopefully she doesn't go grey, and keeps her flashy color and pattern!

Sooo... being gaited vs non gaited affects ear size?! Just kidding , I know you mean the size of the mommy's own ears .

Great website link - thanks! We haven't had any of Bugsy's mules gray out. Hopefully, she won't grey out either...

Ears...LOL - that and the fact that Joy's mom is stretching to be 14 and a half hands and this one's mom is a shade under 16 hands.

You know what - I keep forgetting there is that dang donkey genetics to factor in. I don't know if they "grey out" like horses. I hope not, because I really like baby's color right now.

And yup, mom is a bay tobiano. Might have sabino in her too - very common. Looking at the edge of her white markings there is some roaning. Usually those are completely smooth if it is just tobiano and that light roaning can be a clue to the sabino gene also being present.

I love them, they're gorgeous little babies! You don't see too many mules around here unfortunately .

A few times now, people have driven into our place to asked excitedly if our donkey is a jack. They've seemed pretty disappointed that he's been gelded, I guess he's quite correct and all that, I know my farrier raves about how great his feet are... Anyhow, I'd certainly be willing to give a mule a try some time or another!
