Long Ear Question???

Ok I was reading a post here about a mare that the owner needs to know if she is a hinny, jenny or mule. Im a little confused. What is the difference?? A Jenny is just a female donky right??? Well whats the difference between a mule and hinny?? Arnt they both crosses of horse and donkey?

Yes they are both crosses of horse and donkey. BUT a mule is a donkey jack and a horse mare. A hinny is a horse stallion and a donkey jenny. If I am wrong someone will correct me but I do believe that is it.

that is so confusing though. Crazy i see it they have a different name because the stallion is a horse or jack. Breeding 2 diff breeds still make a horse. We equine people are weird with our crazy names. Do mules look different than hinnys???

To my knowledge you can't tell a hinny from a mule by inspection.

I could be wrong.

The pics I've seen the mules look more square and sturdily built, the hinny's look more horse-like.

I read in Horse Illustrated, July 2007

"...as a rule of thumb most mule heads, ears included, take after the donkey more than the horse. Their voices are unique to each, with an unpredictable blend of bray and whinny. Their toplines are characteristically flat without much wither; their necks are generally straight or slightly ewe-necked. Mules have an angular hip and base-narrow conformation typical of the jack. Mule hooves are not quite narrow and boxy as a donkey's, but neither are they as full and round as a horse's. From the donkey, they inherit lighter muzzles and bellies; from the horse they gain size, athletic ability, and often colour and markings."

"...foals generlaly take after their dam more than their sire..."

I hope that helps. If you want, I can photo copy the ad, and either post it, or PM it to you...It was very interesting!!!

Breed a nicely built quarter horse mare to a jack with good confirmation and you can drastically cut down on the "angular hip and base-narrow conformation"

He's a little chubby here - stays fat on a wisp of hay and handful of grain..

He's super fuzzy here - teddy bear quality, but this is his bootie shot.

And one more that I think shows his confirmation - he's nipping his half brother.

Morning Glory that's a pretty good explanation!

Mule360 that's a really nice-looking group of mules! The one in your avatar is quite handsome. You wouldn't have a pic of a hinny, would you? Although there is a pic of one in the thread referred to.

But see TW, you're not breeding two different breeds to get a mule, you're breeding two different species. Yes, they are both equines but like lions and tigers are both cats, still different species. Not the same as breeding a Qh and a TWH, they are still both horses.

Thank you, Horses&Soccer. I do love my longears. We let the sorrel gelding stay around because he's family.

No hinnys here. We haven't had any success with studs and jennys. We do have a delightful, nicely built peachy dun jenny my dad would like to use to try for a hinny. He just hasn't found her the right boyfriend.

There was a great article in Mules and More about hinnys with pics. It featured a couple of high performing mules in the mule world that are actually hinnys. If I can find it, I'll scan and share.

I read that article, too. I think it said something about the cross of a stallion with a jenny only being successful about 20% of the time. I think I also heard that a stallion is not as likely to find a jenny attractive. What's wrong with those stallions, anyway?
Mule 360, you can share pics of your mules anytime! Really nice looking, would love to see more.
I've got a picture of my friends hinny but I'm such a dummy when it comes to posting pics I'm not sure I'll be able to do it.

Silly stallions! Of course, the maiden mares aren't always very keen on meeting Bugsy, the Jack. But then, he definitely could work on his approach! Loud braying and donkey growls isn't very romantic.

Thanks, Mule Fool! I'd like to see more of your mule also. I'll post pics of our new mule foals starting in March. Sigh...can't wait to meet the new editions. The ears have me every time. (-:

If you like, I'll PM you my email and you can send the pic to me in an email and I'll post for you.

Yea it is still weird why they have 2 names for it. They both are from horse and donkey. But I have seen some that are more horselike than others. Im not one that just really want to own one but they are intresting. I want to go to the famed Mule & Donkey Show here in Shelbyville tennessee for all the gaited ones. I want to see a mule/hinny/donkey move with the head shaking slightly higher action. Ive seen one gaited mule in my life as an exhibition (sp?)and he was outfited in the saddleseat attire and was shaking his head just like any other flatshod walker and made some look bad. I would like to see a little more but in color instead of just sorrell. I hear that around here gaited mules go for HIGH dollar prices.

Makes sense to have 2 words-they are not the same thing at all.
Hinny has a horse sire.
Mule has a Jack for a sire.
Here is a hinny-much more horselike[OK for him,pony-like]

I have to laugh at myself!

When I hear "hinny" I think female, and when I hear "mule", I think male. However, everything I have read recently, was a female mule, and a male hinny.....I know it has nothing to do with gender, but I think hinny sounds feminine, and mule sounds masculine....hehehe...sorry for he rambaling....

Thanks Mule 360. I'm pretty bad about even emailing a pic. I would like to hear more about your mules and what you like to do with them.
