Look at this attack PICTURES

Mule Defense

This is almost unbelievable and may be a first...

A couple from Montana were out riding on the range, he with his rifle and she (fortunately) with her camera. Their dogs always followed them, but on this occasion a Mountain Lion decided that he wanted to stalk the dogs (you'll see the dogs in the background watching). Very, very bad decision...

The hunter got off the mule with his rifle and decided to shoot in the air to scare away the lion, but before he could get off a shot the lion charged in and decided he wanted a piece of those dogs. With that, the mule took off and decided he wanted a piece of that lion. That's when all hell broke loose... for the lion.

As the lion approached the dogs the mule snatched him up by the tail and started whirling him around. Banging it s head on the ground on every pass. Then he dropped it, stomped on it and held it to the ground by the throat. The mule then got down on his knees and bit the thing all over a couple of dozen times to make sure it was dead, then whipped it into the air again, walked back over to the couple (that were stunned in silence) and stood there ready to continue his ride... as if nothing had just happened.

Fortunately even though the hunter didn't get off a shot, his wife got off these 4...

The cat is still alive here and trying to fight back

The mule stomped the cat and then pinned it down and took bits out of his neck

The cat was dead at this time but the mule just kept stomping him for good measure

I need to get me a mule- Tanya

The thing that still stands out to me is the mule attacked. Even if it was dead how many would approach and not run away from the smell of a predator.

I've seen that before. Pretty wild, even if the cat was dead.

My old riding instructor had a study gelding who treated snakes that way. He was positive that the only good snake was a snake that was spread out in a thin layer over a ten foot circle.

After he'd smoosh a snake, he'd stand on it, posing, and snort.

I love the look on the hounds in the background. They must be thinking "Holy Cow! I'm not going NEAR that mule"

Even if it was dead it was still amazing the way that mule just decided it was going to mutilate that cougar!

I can just imagine my horse prancing around a dead mnt. lion snorting and spooking every time the wind blew.

That one pic doesn't look like it is dead. It looks like it is struggling.

This is where the term 'fight or flight' comes in. Horses, donkeys, and mules are normally flight animals those some choose fight at various times. The mule saw the dead cougar as a threat and reacted with his fight instinct.

If you look at how he gets down on his knees that is classic when an equine chooses to fight. If a stallion attacks a person, often times they try to pick the person up, knock them over and/or then will fall to their knees.

My two idiots..ahem.. I mean boys will 'play fight' with each other which somedays means both will be down on their knees, necks wrapped around each other going after the other. It's fun to watch.

The article said it was a dead cougar and they were going to pack it out-mule took offense and tore it up.
Wonder what the hunter thought of his trophy getting all smashed up?
