Pregnant Jenny

A friend just purchased two mini donkey's and has some questions about the gestation period and foaling out a donk as the Jenny is bred. I have a mini donk (gelding). She and I have foaled out many a horse but never a donk. Is it really any different? What should we watch for that might be different? Not sure of the due date yet as she has not talked to the person that has the breeding dates written down yet but I will be sure to put up pictures and keep you guys posted. Thanks

I can tell ya all ya need to know!

Well, with donks it is tricky, they can carry anywhere between 11 months and 13 months.

BUT I have found to expect the baby right around the average gestation which 11 months, 3 weeks, and 5 days.

Donkeys may not show as many signs of foaling as what a horse would. The tiniest change in behaviour may mean baby is on the way. When I was on foal watch I knew when a jenny stood in a different place in the pasture longer than what she usually did.

They will show some of the same signs as horses especially if they are maiden. Watch for pacing, sweating (never seen the sweating but heard it happens), frequent urination, getting up and laying down.

The birth is just like a horse, no need to worry there, everything should progress exactly the same.

Donkeys are more likely to reject thier young however. If the Jenny is maiden or has rejected in the past, make sure she is seperated from the herd for foaling. (A few weeks a head of time to reduce stress!) I have found that a scared mother may leave her baby to join the herd. If she is alone with baby she bonds much better.

Good luck and I WANT PICS!!!!!! If you have any more questions let me know, I will try to help the best I can.

Thanks

Have a little more info on little Mini Pearl. According to the person that knows when she was bred she should be due sometime in May. She is current on Vaccs (Rabies, 5 way, etc.) but apparently has not had any Rhino vaccs through the pregnancy. Are they needed for the donks, same as horses through pregnancy (I assume so). Would you start now and try to get a couple in prior to foaling. BTW she is not a maiden and friend is already working on a stall/paddock for her to foal out in without herd members. Thanks.
